Ok, here it goes. And judging by some of the harsh and attacking responses that I have viewed on this site previously, I am ready for some here. I recently accepted a job offer in Riyadh and am concerned about one thing: the criminal record background check. The employer is based in the states, and I am an American. In my college days, I received a couple misdemeanors. Will these come back to haunt me? Thank you for any responses. Feel free to PM me.

You have no other option but to be honest and provide the info when asked. You might want to briefly describe/define it, then cross your fingers and wait.

Good luck

Apply for the check; if the misdemeanours show up, it will depend on your employer, and to a lesser extent the embassy. If they are a few years' back it is doubtful they will show up on the check.

I was never asked for a police letter during the visa applications, nor was I ever asked about any past convictions at any point. I do have a dui from several years ago.

Will the Saudi's do a police check on there own?

I have no problem disclosing it, I was never asked at any point. I am worried about it popping up at a later date. Then again I really dont want to disclose it if I am not required to.

This requirement is not impose on those with passports from Her Britannic Majesty ! Could it be that the Saudis are suspicious of those from the former colonies ? Perhaps there is some question of reciprocity ?

I have never heard of anyone being refused clearance.

I suspect Scot that the reason is the British police won't issue one; certainly if you have not been resident in the last three years you will have fun.

To work as a supply teacher, I was required to get a certificado de antecedentes penales from the Spanish Embassy. when I got there the lady at the embassy told me they had stopped isssuing them because with the British hysteria about child molestors the embassy had gone from having half-a-dozen requests a year to having half-a-dozen a day, and the authorities in Madrid reckoned there was some kind of huge scam going on. She eventually relented, and promised to process it for me.

The certificate is lying unopened in my desk here. I couldn't wait four months to start working and took a temporary contract in Saudi instead.

Aussies have to do the police check.

Something to do with the convict heritage perhaps.
