A friend of mine teaches on-line. She was showing me how she does it tonite. She'll have a handful of ss in different parts of the world and takes them through a lesson simultaneously.

Does anyone else do this? Now that long-distance computer-phone hook up has arrived (VOIP?)--- apparently it's taking off............. Arrow !!!!

We'll all be out of a job!!!!! Crying or Very sad

I don't think that we will all be out of a job. It could help some of us. Extra money, convenient hours. And hopefully the companies won't just hire anybody, ut will ask for people with experience.

So much information is conveyed in physically-present person-to-person communication that I doubt the telephone can ever replace you in the classroom.

Even between native speakers there is frequent miscommunication over the telephone.

Students NEED to see your face for help with pronunciation and non-verbal cues.

I would guess that inexpensive - video phone communication (certainly coming!) COULD at some point begin to reduce the need for classroom or personal-contact type teaching - but that kind of individual technology is not available or affordable for a good part of the world yet.

Hopefully we can last another ten or twenty years! But, we never really know what life is going to bring us, do we?

I don't know. Look at all the distance learning courses, you can do a BA, MA and even a PhD.

There's got to be something about it. It might be the future of teaching.

I think there's plenty of room for both internet video-conferencing and the traditional class setting. I've been checking out some of these online teaching options, and I think I might end up upgrading my home PC's internet connection so that I can start doing such teaching for a few extra hours' pay per week.

I think Naturegirl is right. Teaching online is likely the way of teaching in the future.

I hope that we all keep in mind that change does not always equate to something being better. Online teaching could turn out to be better but it may not. So I hope that people are not just doing it because it looks interesting or is convient.

Not if they're on the phone, they don't.

I've done a fair amount of online teaching, and I think it's a great way of helping students with their listening skills. It's good training for when they need to telephone and don't have these non-verbal clues to help.

When online teaching does make a difference, it's when it's combined with other elements in a structured programme. For example, if you combine it with downloadable materials and exercises, or tutoring assignments, you can produce a well-balanced study programme.

I saw one program for on-line teaching (will share the link when I check my other computer) but they are suggesting to buy a microphone and a web camera. Now, how many hours do you think you can get? Well, I guess it would depend on when you are available and how hard you and/ora company you sign up with try to get students. Here in Japan, web teaching is not really taking off as most students prefer to be taught face to face, though I did teach a student in the past.

Personally, I am more interested in correcting essays online, as I don't need to talk for that, and the correction time is more flexible. Anyone know of any opportunities for this kind of work?

I did some video-conferencing last year and delivered a three hour pron session for trainee teachers as part of a series of lectures. Good fun to connect between universities in distant countries and your own....but connections can be difficult and breakdown in communications really puts a spanner in the works, modelling of the mouth using your hands does not come across too well and this is important as sound quality is not as good as it could be. We are doing it again this year so you might hear from me again on this as an update.
Online has opportunities as well but do you really know how many people are watching your "lesson" in this other place? and are they all paying you or the person/people who is/are paying you? Even 1-2-1 is open to abuse with others piggy-backing on your student or perhaps recording for later use.
I know it is far-fetched, but it is the old off-air recording syndrome, Imagine going to a country you have never visited only to find that everyone was using DVDs of your lessons for learning English.... on sale at a market near you... There are many out there with fewer scruples than yourselves. Ok you get paid for the work you do but what happens if... after a month of work and you have not received a penny and you do not have any contact back to your numerous emails to those who hired you? How do we protect ourselves against theft...that is what it is...of online earnings? I would normally ask for payment up front when teaching 1-2-1 students. I would also know there was only one.
just a few thoughts

Ah, these kinds of concerns plague all Internet selling of both services and products. Bank transfers or payment by Paypal would work just fine.
