What is the ugliest city you have ever lived in? (and, to make it esl related, were the rudest sts in the same city, or differnt? are the two somehow related?)

I would say istanbul-minus a few nice properties on the water- is the absolute mostest ugliest city I have ever lived in. including guatemala city, and at least they can say the had a long civil war. But, I don't think the turks win for rudest sts. I would say hong kong.

I went to college in Towson, Maryland for a year and a half and it was pretty damn ugly.

And the Christian-Right Southern Baptist students were rude, arrogant, and bigoted with an appalling fashion sense.

I didn't last there long, needless to say...

I think Istanbul is a beautiful city. A Bit muddy at times but what the hell. Brussels is by far the ugliest city I've ever been to (not lived). The rudest students I ever had were British.

Exactly, Entrailicus! Of course there are ugly bits, but there are more really beautiful parts. And even the ugly parts are interesting-looking....

Has to be said, Istanbul is a great and beautiful city, although I may run it down in this forum I can see the attraction and I have visited on a number of occassions .Living there though ,thats something else . Leeds is a hell of a lot worse and London well that is in a place all of its own . But basically the U.K is pretty screwed up anyway .

Pretty good all round ,the weather, food and the people are the best I have seen in this country . But as others may have said before Izmir is not typical of the country, however, one day ,one day .

My wonderful spouse has taken to driving thro every shanty town he can find, and, while driving, says something along the lines of- "look, I bet not one of your foriegn friends has ever seen this much of istanbul, look at all the cultural experience you're getting"....and then every so often he throws in a "only the poor of istanbul would live this way. oh, my people!(benim millet) what has become of you?" and then launches into a history lesson about the great and the good of turkish history. (he just got a raise, so I'm chalking this wierd behavior up to working thro some personal issues)
We did a lot of driving this week, so I guess I say more than my usual share.... Are shanty towns a big issue in Leeds and Towson? or are you just saying that all the differnt colours of hammered out metal cans used to make the shanty roofs are colourful and artistic? thus more beatiful than Leeds?
Istanbul is great, wonderful, fun, ugly ugly ugly city.

1. Next winter when it's snowing at night, take small boat from Uskudar to Besiktaş. The most rommantic view in the world.

2. Next spring get up early buy a fresh hot simit and have breakfeast in Mode and look over to the euro side. over 1000 years of histroy sitting there infront of you.

3. Next fall go for a walk along Bebek seaside road. Sit back at Bebek Cafe and have a tea and play a round tavla.

4. Next summer catch the Baris Manco Vapur from either Kadikoy or Karakoy. Take a in full Boğaz tour at night listening to top jazz, classic and some Turkish folk music.

In the end this city is ugly. Sultanbey, Talabaşi, and the rest are beyond any type of slum we may have in the west.
But the there are also some places that exist here and here alone.
If you have the time and the energy you get get through all the sh.it and find a few real spots of 24 k gold.

Itams 1-2 and 3 all either are on the asian side or start off there.

Thou have to admit that most of the best views in this town are on your side.

As for Zonguldak. It come in at number 4 on my list of places not worth going to.

1. Osmania.
2. orum. Nothing to to do or see in any of these places.
3. Siirt.
4. Zonguldak.
5. Tokat.
