Also in the small city where I lived first my friends seemed to have no problem finding day care. If you worked in the evening that might be another matter. |

another lot of very helpful and thought-provoking information from everyone -- many thanks again!
i would love to teach in South America -- many of the countries there hold great appeal for me (i sometimes regret not having accepted the teaching position in Cali, Columbia back the early '90's, but then life took me in another direction i so enjoyed).
My daughter, having been educated entirely in French (so far), finds Spanish pleasant to her ear, so may not be as a difficult an adjustment as learning some other languages (assuming we went to a Spanish-speaking country).
although i would love to experience the Asain world, i have gleaned this might be difficult at this point in my daughter's young life, so have decided to relegate that section of the world to the 'some day' category.
i'm in no rush, preferring to listen and watch and do some volunteer teaching locally right now.
at least this power outage/shortage we are experiencing is helpful -- i'm remembering what it is like to live without creature comforts again!

Hi again Myra
I'd be interested to know where you decide to go when you do make a decision. It's nice to know someone else is in the same proverbial boat as I. I've thought about South America myself, but the money just isn't as good as it is in some other parts of the globe (Asia and the Middle East specifically). I've set my sights on Japan. Now I have to do some more investigating to see if that will be a viable option for us for next year. It's not a decision to be taken lightly, as you well know. Money is a huge factor when you are a single parent. Childcare and schooling are also critical factors in the decision-making process. I'm a bit nervous, but also excited by the possibilities. When are you planning to go? (By the way, feel free to PM me anytime. ) |

Make sure she gets an education in English as well. |

grade three -- which she starts in less than one week! -- is when the French board begins English as a subject. Then there's the nightmare of every child -- a parent who will help with homework (either language)!
