That would be a great place to set up home (even though it is a student/political hotspot at times) I wonder what salaries are like? I know that language course providers such as EF, ILP etc pay very low due to 'cost of living' (but everything really costs the same with the exception of fried rice & housing).

And ignore the fact that no matter how hard you try, it is simply impossible to live like a local. The colour of your skin means that prices are by default higher than what locals pay - for anything other than fixed price items at the department stores. You may think you're getting close to paying local, but you ain't gettin' them apples for anywhere near as cheap as you could if you were Indonesian.

Why do you think so many expats send their maid to the market for the chicken, fruit and vegies.

I know when I tried it, the price of a 1kg chicken jumped from the normal Rp11,000 to Rp16,000.

Let the buyer (bule) beware!

And yes, prices in Yogya are lower in some areas, housing especially, but fuel , clothing and supermarket costs are exactly the same as the rest of Java.
