After a lot of research, surfin' in on here, and working my a$$ off on my essay, I finally submitted my first application to AEON  . The only reason I took so long with my essay is because since all of the big 4 schools ask in one form or another 'why do you want to work and live in Japan,' I figured it'd be good to write one "generic" essay about my reasons for wanting to live and work in Japan and copy and paste it accordingly. Of course, I will tailor my essay to each place I'm applying to and address them specifically as to why I want to work for them and any other questions they want answered. Location wise, my first choice is Tokyo and my second choice is Osaka. Seems everything I need is located in Tokyo so I hope I get placed there with whichever school decides to take me (if they do-fingers crossed). Just out of curiosity, where are some of you located? I've noticed someone's in Sapporo and someone else is in Shinjuku. I'd like to meet up with some of you should I be lucky enough to make it over. |

Well we all know that eikaiwa's are not the most pedagogicaly sound establishments and that they are often run by dictatorial managers and borderline psychotic trainers who will happilly break labour laws for their own convenience and fire you after a year or two with no explanation, also the 'light sales' at Aeon are a real pain in the ass.
BUT.
I had two of the best years of my life working at Aeon, I made some of my best friends, had many sensational nights out, had some truly enjoyable and rewarding lessons, and it ultimately led me into a professional ELT career (not with Aeon! God forbid!)
Let us know where you end up. Take it for what it is and have a brilliant time.  |

I once had a great time back-packing around Mexico living on a dollar a day. Met some great people, including a few senoritas.
I also enjoyed working on an oil rig in the North Sea during my summers while in graduate school. Some of the best homemade whiskey I've ever had!
Of course, I hope the OP has a wonderful time in Japan.
But since this is a "jobs forum" I attempted to relay some things I know about AEON. That is: it's nothing to be too excited about. As you wrote:

I was actually thinking of applying to Aeon Amity, so this thread has me quite interested. Can you elaborate on what you mean when you imply that the job is nothing to get excited about? Does anyone know if you can plan out your own lessons? I don't expect much from an eikawa, but if they are at all professional and allow for some degree of actual real teaching it doesn't sound all that bad.

I wrote this more because I was happy I finally took that first step. We all know that taking those 'first steps' towards something different is never easy. Also, I'm not naive to what goes on "behind the scenes" at an eikawa, esp. with what Womblingfree mentioned. Yes, I've been following the threads here. Glenski, yes, you are "the Sapporo guy" I know...lol! D.O.S., I'll pm you if I have any questions about Tokyo. I do know I want to check out the Rappongi district. Of course, I'm not limited to that area. So getting back to the thread...I'd like to hear where everyone's located.

Aye yie yie...just got an email from them. I'll be contacted within two weeks to an information and group interview if they like my application. The wait begins....and so do the nerves. I know it's gonna be the same way with the other three as well  |

They responded pretty quick to me... I have a group interview coming up in april (I had to push it back because of school).
At least that'll give me more time to figure out if I really want to do that. |

The thing about Aeon or any other big bucks language school is that the time you have there is largely dependent on the atmosphere and attitude of the school you're at.
I went from a laid back, fun, do what you want school, to a few weeks at a failing, miserable, clean the toilets, let's all have a nervous breakdown school.
If the school is successful the trainers and management staff will pretty much let you do what the hell you want.
Also Aeon consists of several different areas, Aeon East, Aeon West etc. Each of these has a completely autonomous existence, the lesson structures are different, the trainers are different, the whole ethos is different.
All I remember is if you're going with Aeon East Japan watch out for the trainer that rhymes with Driller Killer |

| Very true, Wombling. Thanks for your wealth of information. I always like hearing both sides of the coin. However, I want to restate that AEON is NOT the only school I'll be applying to. It seems that this part of my message is getting "lost in translation". I will say, however, that AEON is my first choice because, from what I've read, you actually get weekends off be it Sat-Sun or Sun-Mon. At least this is one of my reasons. Also, where is everyone located? |

Aeon, Nova, Geos, ECC, Berlitz, Shane, Gabba, etc. They're all pretty much the same. For what it's worth Aeon is one of the better ones, but seriously there's not more than a whisker between any of them.
I had many friends who had fun at all of them. Also those who could spend an entire weekend moaning about any of them.
Take whatever experience they can offer you but if you want my opinion don't do more than a couple of years. After that time you really have exhausted the potential for personal developement at an eikaiwa (that is if they even offer you a second renewal). |

6 days. I received the application confirmation last Thursday and the acceptance for a group interview yesterday. |
