It was my day off today and I decided to go to Shinjuku and have a look around. I saw a huge Nova sign (whats new?) and couldn't help but have a look inside. I have never been to any language school in Japan but after reading alot of comments about the corp, my curiousity got the better of me.

Situation: I walk inside and a nice, young looking, pleasant female walks over to me and makes easy-going conversation (in Japanese). I was reading one of their glossy brochures which I found on the wall. The questions started turning personal and I realised what she was trying to do. The personal questions started from "How old are you?" and quickly moved onto "What type of Visa are you on?" and "Do you want to become a SENSEI (teacher)?" I was stunned, shocked and amazed @ her trying to recruit me (I was someone who walked in off the street!!!!) The conversation was getting interesting and I was enjoying the ride. We sat down at her desk and she started talking about contracts, wages, etc. She gave me a tour of the building and I saw 4 poor souls working in TINY cubicles. They managed to squash 5 people (arm to arm) plus the teacher into one of the rooms. UNBELIEVABLE! Ok, so you guys may not be shocked and this is probably just another example of how f***ed NOVA is but I thought it was defintely worth sharing.

Has anyone else experienced souch touting from NOVA managers (just to make her self esteem feel good.. hehe!) ??

Reminds me of those battery hens that are 3-4 to a cage and can not turn around. All they do is eat and lay eggs all day.

They arent rooms, they are more like walk-in closets.

That is why I wrote "TINY CUBICLES" previously before writing "rooms". A room is an undefined amount of space that is within 4 walls - technically speaking, it is a room.

Must have missed that "cubicles" bit too. That means a broom closet and toilet enclosure are rooms as well.

They sure are stupid- all of them, aren't they- the teacher and the four students. Were they forced to do that or were they there because they wanted to be- the teacher because he agreed to work there and the students because they thought it was worth their money?

What's next- stupid people who work or eat at Mc Donald's, stupid people who work or shop at Walmart?

They were all there because they had no idea that the conditions would be so bad when they signed the contract/handed over the money.

Got fed up with union-bashing and turned your attention to promoting Nova now I see...

Eejit!

A strange and unfamiliar foreigner walks in off the street who is not a staff member. What other possible reason would a person do that than if they are looking for a job on spec? Maybe they get about one cold-call a week and she assumed you were job-hunting. No great surprise there.

If its a slow day maybe shes just making conversation. Pleasant chit-chat but it probably used up 30 minutes of her work day.

The students should go to ECC. Then again, there must be a reason the students want to be stuffed into a small room like that.... Maybe it's better thaey stay at NOVA...

The rooms aren't great but remember that this is Japan. Some people's apartments aren't that much bigger. I mean, when you only have 4 people in a class you can't give them a full sized classroom. Not if you want to have 10 classrooms in a building. Perhaps you hadn't noticed but you are in Tokyo and space is at a premium. That said I would love to have a little room to walk around a bit and a whiteboard on the wall to write on.

*can't believe he is sticking up for NOVA*

I used to work in a room like that in an eikaiwa. We had a partition wall on either side that used to slide shut when something else was going on and I would find myself in this little cubicle faced with five kids who couldn`t get move past each other without standing up. It certainly killed off any movement games. And even then my boss was convinced he could get seven or eight in if necessary.

Regarding Nova, I always laugh when the cute girl by the station always hands me the advertising for new students. Whatever minimal flaws there might be in my English certainly won`t get ironed out by Nova classes! I assume she`s just trying to get rid of the things, otherwise I would have to assume she`s a complete moron.

I always take them though. I can usually use the tissues.

Why shouldn't she give you a flyer? You assume she's a complete moron, but why should she assume you can speak every language NOVA offers?

the Nova woman never gives me any free info or tissues (once she sees my white face), but once I was with my wife and she got the free Nova tissues. My wife is an English teacher so she would never go to Nova, but she always will accept free tissues.

Nova mostly puts their schools by train stations, so the rent is expensive. That is why the rooms are small.

The blatant lack of any kind of human feeling of empathy for the condition of others by some people on this forum is just shocking. No one was holding a gun to their head so I guess they must be all responsible for their own misery. Great attitude!

What will you do for an encore? Kick a puppy down the road? Are you really so hard and jaded that you cannot offer even a word of encouragement to anyone? My momma taught me that if you don't got something nice to say -- don't say it! In the 60 posts that you have made on Dave's, have you ever ONCE said anything nice? Or even neutral? How about something constructive instead of just tearing into people? I think I remember maybe once you made a helpful suggestion to someone regarding Canadian health insurance... But aside from that....?

The exact scene that comes to my mind is from the Simpsons when Bart gets an elephant.

Bart bids a tearful goodbye to Stampy outside the animal refuge. Stampy
reaches for him and Bart cringes, expecting to be put in his mouth once
again, but instead Stampy lifts him on his back. The elephant runs into
the pasture, spilling Bart off, and starts butting another elephant.
"Attaboy, Stampy! Butt him once for me!"

[Stampy butts another elephant]
Marge: Gosh, I thought he'd be happier in his true habitat.
Warden: Oh, I think he is.
Marge: Then why is he attacking all those other elephants?
Warden: Well, animals are not like people, Mrs. Simpson. Some of them
act badly because they've had a hard life, or have been
mistreated...but, like people, some of them are just jerks.
Stop that, Mr. Simpson.
[Homer butts the warden repeatedly]
