Are you just looking for a place to stay for sightseeing?
Or are you looking for something else. |

what is your price range?
Depends how much you want to save.
Do you mind sharing a bathroom/toilet? |

I live in China and English teachers in China do not get paid very well. Especially when they take that meagar salary out of China. Thus, by cheap accommodations I mean cheap. In China cheap accommodations mean SHARED squat pot cold showers for 5 USD a night (including 3 meals).... of course, I would like something a little nicer than that... but I will stoop to that level. Unless things have changed greatly, I am not afraid as a woman of travelling alone. I think Japan is safe. I speak survival Japanese (still)... used to be conversational.
I will come to Japan around the 23rd of May and stay for a week. As a undergraduate student I lived in Otsu for 10 months on a work study program through Lansing Community College and Biwako Kisen Steamship Company. If you live around Otsu, you may have heard of the Michigan Boat or came across some foreigners who work on it. I did this in 1997. This program is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and a number of people I know will be coming into town for the celebration. Plus, Kyoto is currently my favorite city on the planet, and I would love to just go there for week and kick back. I also plan to head over to Shigaraki to check out some pottery and hopefully meet with with my tanuki making friend.
The LCC people are making arrangements for staying at the Prince Hotel but that is around 20,000 for a single. They mentioned budget hotel accommodations for 5,000 yen. I can stay in a 5 star hotel in China for that amount of money.
Previously, we were able to stay in the Michigan House for around 1,500 yen a night (for 2 bedroom apartment, with kitchen and bath). But rooms there are not avaliable for this event. I dont expect to find anything cheaper than that, but I dont want to spend 5,000 either. |

You wont find any place in Kyoto under 5,000 a night unless you consider youth hostels. Business hotels is all you will get.
The one in Matsugasaki I dont know at all but generally houses are old, no central heating. Weather in May is spring, quite warm. For 26,000 yen a month you can stay in shared accomodation, perhaps with communal toilet and bathroom. I lived in matsugasaki for 4 years and its a nice area.
there is also another one in the Kitaoji area in northern Kyoto which is cheap as well.
