Ok, so this is late in posting. We just had our International Women's Day march and rally yesterday, with the actual day on Wednesday. Seeing as my plan is to move to Japan to teach English should I be accepted, I want to know...what kind of events does Japan have for either International Women's Day itself or International Women's Week, if events/festivities go a whole week? Also, I noticed very clearly that the Migrant Worker's March took place on March 5th which is just days b4 IWD. Is that just a coincidence or was it meant to take place on or around IWD? I ask these questions because while I want to explore a new and different culture, there are aspects of my life I'd like to keep the same. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Y'know, IWD went by here in Jland, and I never even thought about it.

I suggest that you check out http://www.being-a-broad.com/ for future events. They also have an awesome message board that covers a wide variety of topics.

There was a recent article in the Japan Times. Unfortunately you have to go through their simple registration process first or use the Google cache:

Thanks, Yamanote. I've printed off a copy for myself Very Happy . Is IWD in Japan a whole week or month of festivities geared toward women and other marginalized populations? And do you have other events and/or demonstrations geered towards women's issues, ie. 'Take Back the Night'? I've hooked up via email to this site www.being-a-broad.com which is a women's organization started by a group of expat women. I'll be touching base with them as well re. these questions. Any info. I can get would be great. Thanks.

basically, no.
there are women's rights groups, but it's very, very difficult to get anything off the ground. you might like to know that japan is considering revoking article 23 of its constitution, which is the one that guarantees gender equality.
