I can never sleep on the overnighters...I used to commute between Acapulco and Mexico City often at night, but had to switch to daytime travel for the havoc it was wreaking on me. Guerrero has some amazing landscape to see as you climb or descend the Sierra. Hold on to yer beer going round La Perra though.
On the run to Guadalajara - 8 hrs - the overnight was my only option until I discovered Aviacsa airlines. 45 minutes.
Never had a problem with thievery on a bus in Mexico, other than people trying to steal my seat! |

Moonraven mentioned Pachuca in the past as a place she lived and a place with ESL teaching opportunities, yet fairly close to DF
does anyone know about the cost of living there? approximate population size? cultural things? what kinds of housing would be available in a place that size?
the Lonely Planet / Moon books don't seem to have much on Pachuca

I also seem to remember that she called nearly any place with modern facilities "gringolandia." Heres a little tidbit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pachuca%2C_Mexico
In Mexico, a poker hand worth nothing is often called a 'Pachuca.'
that doesn't sound promising |

modern facilities -- one ticket to gringolandia, por favor! camping is fun, but not a lifestyle

| I have heard that Pachuca is close to the mountains and has some good hiking in areas like Mineral de Chico. Anyone been there? |

I've tent camped all over Oaxaca and Chiapas, BUT I was with my MEXICAN husband. I'm constantly amazed what a different reception we get in rural Mexico together than I get when I'm with other non-Mexicans.
Even when he's not with me, if I let a photo of the two of us together "fall out" of my book, people suddenly become friendly, welcoming and open.
We've camped places where I've definately thought I wouldn't be safe here alone. But that's mostly just pitching the tent in by a river somewhere, not in a camp ground. We've also camped in camp grounds at Palenque and on the Oaxacan coast, where I felt like I'd be fine here alone/in the company of other non-Mexican.
So, I guess I'd say you'd be fine in camp grounds, taking the same precautions you'd take anywhere. |
