Just wondering if anyone out there is living in Malaga or Alicante? Is there any ESL scene there? |

Does the lack of response to this topic mean 'no'?
I'd love to live in Southern Spain where it's warm all year round. Is there really no teaching available here? |

Thanks Moore. I'll do that. I didn't even know they had a Yellow Pages in Spain. |

Hi Folks,
Yes there is EFL in Malaga. Here's the good news: there are approximately 25-30 language schools in the Malaga city area (including Fuengirola, Torremolinos, etc.) and quite a few more in the smaller towns in the hills and in Marbella. The Paginas Amarillas are not reliable, many of the schools online you see are defunct or merged with other schools. I found that out the hard way.
Now the bad news: How do I know all this? Because I got my CELTA certification in November from Sevilla CLIC and have been living in Rincon de la Victoria (just outside of Malaga) for 6 months and have been hoofing it all over the area with my CV in hand. I personally, on foot, visited 26 schools that I could reach via bus or train. In that time--2 job offers: 1 for 8.50 euros an hour free lance (gross) in which I walked out of an interview; the other was for 10 Euros an hour but free lance. The school appeared dodgy so I turned that one down. There were other schools hiring, but without a car I couldn't do the hours they required or it was so far that I would have cut my hourly rate in half by travel costs. I thought that I would at least find some part-time work after Jan but it has been a complete bust. Fortunately, with my prior career I banked some $$. I've done some private work but very unreliable. It is ferociously competitive with so many British expats already here and some (illegal) working Americans. I have heard from several DOS's that the you have to hit the area in advance of Sept if you want a shot at a job. Just to let you know that it wasn't just me, several of my CELTA classmates did not get jobs in Spain and had to return to Britain. None of my classmates got a job in the Malaga area. If you want more info, including a hand made list of the schools I visited, drop me a line. |
