I leave my PC sitting in the open in my apartment, along with my TV, stereo, DVD player, etc.
I suppose I had better put them into locked storage with an armed guard the next time I leave town. |

I don't want to sound picky, but I can't answer your poll question with either yes or no. I'd have to answer yes and no. Yes, I'd take my laptop with me. No, I wouldn't leave it sitting out in the open in my apartment. |

Based on a few unpleasant experiences while living in Mexico, I find that I'm much more security conscious about valuable possessions here than when I lived in Midwest USA. First of all, I have very few things of monetary value in my house here compared to what I had in the USA . . . mainly because many of them have been ripped off since I moved here. Just like most other people in this city, I now live surrounded by wrought iron (window protectors, door protectors, and gates separating my property from the street.)
It may be unique to the Mexican city in which I live, but people here normally don't leave their houses unattended for more than a couple of hours at a time if at all. People with money live in gated communities, hire security guards, and have live-in domestics in their houses. People who can't afford all of those things rarely if ever leave their houses unattended either. If a family goes somewhere, someone stays home to watch the house . . . or houses, since it's common for members of the same extended family to live next door to each other.
I have a couple of housemates, and I trust them. Our work schedules are such that at least one of us is in the house at almost any time of the day and night. Someone living alone with a very set work schedule like most teachers have -- too easy for burglars to case a house and figure out when to break in. When I go on vacation, which is for about ten days once a year during my very short summer break, I make arrangements for a local friend to cover my shift of watching the house, and I take my few small valuable possessions with me. My PC, TV, and DVD player are locked in my room whenever I'm not at home, whether on vacation, at work, or just out of the house for a while.

The US is a big country, don't forget!
I'd do different things in different cities (and probably different areas of different cities) |

It certainly is.
No matter which neighborhood I've lived in here in DF, I've gotten to know my neighbors very well. I think that when you can start to see your neighbors as people and not as random noises, or something to be endured, magic happens. Everyone looks out for each other, from the neighborhood shopkeep, to the guy that parks cars, to the guys running the taco stand, and everyone in between. |

I won't answer your poll because it appears to me to have been started as a malicious jab against another poster.

I think that it was wise of you to head off speculation and offer an answer cwc!
My grandmother lived in a small city, Manchester NH. She and her elderly women friends would complain about all the time about crime. Inevitably it was what they saw on TV news that made them afraid, or gossip about someone who knew someone else who was robbed. I think the security measures people take often reflects more about the local culture and perceptions about street crime than actual crime rates. |
