i have a master's in social work, a 4 week tefl certificate, i'm 50 but if i may say so myself i look younger than that, i tend to interview well, and i'm enthusiastic because i really do love teaching english. do you think i can just come with no job and get one before spending $2000 or so? did any of you do that?
oh, and i like workign with all ages BUT i don't want to teach more than 25 hours or so a week.

You can get a job very easily. Smile The best place to look is the ajarn.com jobs board; there's no point looking for work before you're in the country, but once there you should be able to get something in a couple of weeks (although you're unlikely to be paid for another month after that). Obviously the longer you can afford to wait, the more choice you will have.

As unis, elementary and high schools start up in May, now is a pretty good time to find a job in Thailand. I think you'd have an offer or two within a week of starting your search.

I arrived there in Oct 99, no previous experience, no CELTA -- had 3 solid offers my first week there. Spent maybe 1200 bucks before I got my first paycheck.

Keep in mind that most Thai schools won't hire you sight unseen or recruit from abroad -- but the ones that do might offer a better package; higher pay, housing, etc.
