Hi there,
I've never been to Japan before and was thinking of visiting a friend of mine in Tokyo in the first week of May. However, I'm told that this is a public holiday in Japan, and was just wondering if this should put me off going or not.
I used to live in China, and trying to travel during public holidays was always a bit of a nightmare (hordes of tourists everywhere, difficulty getting train tickets, everything being expensive, most places being shut etc...). Is Japan similar at all?
Any suggestions/experiences you may have would be greatly appreciated
Thanks... |

Yes, it is called Golden Week. Everyone in the country seems to take it off and travel. Places won't be shut down, but you will find travel and lodging costs very high, and transportation to be very crowded, especially during the beginning and end of that period. |

I would avoid expressways, airports and trainstations a day or two before the beginning and the end e,g the second of May and the sixth and seventh (which is a Sunday and not a work day)
Road and public transport are congested 120-130% at peak times. Go to Tokyo during the middle of Golden week and you will find the place almost deserted as half of Tokyo rushes back to their hometowns. The rush is at the beginning and end. |
