| I am planning on heading to Japan in either late August or early January. I understand that the best jobs hire from January to March and start in April. For those who have been through this process, what do you do for money if you land a job in January or February, but don't start until April? Thanks for the insight! |

What would you do if the new job was in your own country and not in Japan?
If you are broke and cant afford to live for two months with no income, you find a job and work or you borrow it. Money doesnt grow on trees. |

Let me clarify my inquiry: Are there practical ways to make money for 1-3 months while waiting for a teaching position to start? Stealing isn't my gig, but teaching private lessons could be. If I was in my own country, I would not be asking these questions about employment.
Has anyone on this forum taught privates before they began their first teaching position in Japan? Has anyone found other temporary work while waiting for a position to begin? |

No, it doesn't sound practical.
First, it takes time to get enough students together to be able to pay the bills. Most students that you can find for yourself cannot be considered a reliable source of income. What do you do if your students lose interest or cancel at the last minute?
Secondly, if you are somehow lucky enough to get students what do you do with them once your full-time position starts?

This also sounds a little strange. Do you actually have a job lined up? Do you have a visa?
I would suggest you make your start up money at home where you have alot more choices and try and organize work from home. |

You can always earn the bare minimum (i.e. 1,000 yen/hour) by offering your services at one of the English cafes around Tokyo. I went to a few of these when I first got to Japan in order to practise speaking some Japanese with the people there. More than once, the manager of the cafe offered to pay me money to stay longer so as to keep a conversation going in English for the Japanese patrons.
Keep in mind, though, you'll easily need almost 10,000 yen per day just to meet your expenses, unless you can find someone to mooch off of. |
