I don't think it'll be a problem. I think there are a lot of older teachers here.

Mary, I saw this a few days ago and wasn't being rude by not answering, but...

Please just do a search in this forum as this topic has been addressed many many many times. Go to page 2 of the threads and look under the agism and the nationality discussion threads from past posts and they will answer all your questions that you didn't ask in your original post about the topic.

I also saw this several days ago but I only take initiative to log in and post once or twice a month at best usually. In fact Vietnam has a bias in favor for older people. Gotta be the kind of person that isn't going anywhere, have all your wildness or adventure out of you, just wanna laze around sitting in a cafe staring out at the street for pasttime. From what I've seen around and from talk too is that women, and older men get much more respect from students than the 35 and under crowd (like me). The more youthful teachers not only generally find Vietnam of little pleasure, but the students tend to really go to town sometimes on said teachers. With older people it seems they put on a more civilized act.

$15 an hour? TOPS! Forget what these guys on the internet say about how great it is here and how they only work for 18 or more. Talk talk. Now: without the 25% tax (huge) for people at 6 months and under, I would say look to start at $12 an hour, prove yourself for a couple of months then try to work up to $13 or $14 if you think the school can go up to it. You said you have a Masters. So I think your "intern" period should only be 1 month, then move up to 13/14, then eventually after a while up to $15.

However from what I'm seeing is of all the schools I know they are kicking in the 25% tax which takes your $12 an hour (not much as it is) down to $9 -- Thailand wages but not while in Thailand! $9 doesn't sound too bad until you do it!

My advice on that?! Try to hack around at small schools if they haven't kicked in the huge tax yet. 25% is awful! I predict it will take awhile but eventually the people running this country will realize 25% is too much.
