After getting out of Japan, doing a year, two, or three. . . what do you plan to do afterwords? What career path do you intend to follow? Love to know. Thanks.

This is an interesting question. While in Japan I played a lot of internet poker, with a goal of one day reaching the World Series of Poker and becoming professional. After I left Japan I had made a lot of money online (saved virtually none from teaching tho) and even won entry into the WSOP last year. Things were looking good and I had made over 30k in 1 year playing poker part time. Unfortunately I didnt make money at WSOP and have been on a vicious losing streak for a while. I think this is due to the fact that poker is no longer an enjoyable hobby (as it was in Japan), but a stressful full time job. I have had to face facts that I need a career and poker is not it, at least not for the forseeable future. Hence I'm hoping to do a technical computer course in the Fall, as my Degree in Media really isn't worth the paper it's written on. |

After five years of saving up my pennies in Japan I came home to Canada to go to Law school last year. Next month I'll be finished first year, 2 more to go. |

Thanks. Beyotch is definitely the correct word for it!
Won't be doing any clerking any time soon. This summer I'll be doing whatever work I can get, but between 2nd and 3rd year hopefully I'll score something.
Don't know what kind of law I want to get into. I'm thinking of patents and intellectual property. Or immigration law. Or international trade law. Or....well really anything at this point, it all seems interesting.
I take it you've been through it all? |

International Law or Intellectual Property law, very good choices. I was going for International Commerce at GMU, before I started teaching.
A bit of caution with IP law (at least, if you are going for Entertainment law): your workflow is very staggered. What I mean by that is, if you become an entertainment lawyer, your work cycle is extremely cyclical until you get your clientelle up. the other fact is most young, aspiring entertainers can't afford the legal fees, which puts a heavier crunch on things. I have a buddy who was doing that and had to get out because of that very issue. With his student loan debt, the work wasn't constant enough to earn a living. He ended up going into general practice with an Intl firm in NY. |

Depending on how I go, I may come back home, do private tutoring while beginning a university degree, which will enable me much more choice in work available in this field, and maybe a chance to complete my ultimate dream to live and work in Hong Kong or Singapore. |

My plan is to go to Japan for a few years, gain some transferable skills while expanding my horizons and return home to work in social services. |
