Me & my girlfriend live in Japan, and are currently back in Canada for two weeks. My girlfriend went to the dentist for a checkup and unfortunately has been hit with a rather hefty bill.
We are wondering if it might be cheaper to get some of the smaller fillings done in Japan, does anyone have any idea on the average price for a filling?
She has insurance through JMA if that changes anything, and we live in Osaka.

| If you have the silver JMA package then dental isnt covered. If you have Gold, it's covered up to $1250 US |

I've been happy enough with the quality fo the work I've had done myself (including regular fillings and root canal work) but my daughter's US orthodontist was outraged at what he saw as very inferior work and had all of her work redone before proceding with her braces.
Note, Japanese dentists take FOREVER to finish their work. They seem to be used to doing one little part of the process and then having you come in again...and again...and again. One the plus side you can end up paying as little as 500 yen for any particular visit! |

I had a root canal done over three weeks and 8 visits. The reason given to me when I pointed out that back home I would have had the procedure finished in 2 visits was because of the way the insurance is allocated. Something about the patient paying the 500 yen per visit 8 times as opposed to paying the 500 yen twice and the excess above the insured amount in other words the insurance covers the first, say, 10000yen and the patient pays the rest. The dentist told me had saved me about 12000 yen by spreading the work over multiple visits. |

Not to mention the opportunity to bill insurance eight times instead of two. Or did you really think he was only concerned about you?

Funny. I had a similar experience with my Japanese wife. She had several crappy (and probably unnecessary) root canals done years ago in Japan. A relative practicing in the U.S. did one legitimate root canal there. Not long ago she visited a different dentist in the U.S. who took X-rays of her teeth and without us saying a word immediately announced "You must have had this work done overseas. All but this one (pointing at my relative's work) look like they've been done in China." |
