Anyone placed (or that lives) there have any first hand knowledge?
I'm coming there in May and want to make the transition as smooth as possible (for me this includes surfing ) |

I watched a few of my surf in near Nawa and Tomari.
...where are you from?
...are you used to surfing waves that do not exceed five feet?
If so then everywhere in Japan is tailor made for you. |

The best place for surfing is on the Pacific coast in Kochi, Shikoku and in Miyazaki.
I have never heard of swells on the japan Sea coast, which faces Korea. |

I'm prob considered an intermediate surfer and I'm from the gulf coast but have surfed all over the place.
I've read articles on surfing in Japan and I hear that the west coast (sea of japan) by Tottori can get pretty good in the fall through winter months.
I'm pretty much just looking for sombody who has surfed there personally to tell me what the break is like and its consistancy. There is a lot of info and pic's on the web but not much in terms of actual experience up there (at least in english).
Thanks =) |

not to take the thread away from tottori, but in response to paulh's comment that kochi, shikoku or miyazaki are the best in japan, i would seriously question that.
they have great setups in areas there but are reliant on a lot of things coming together to get good consistent waves.
the coasts of chiba and ibaraki are far more consistent and attract a lot more swell - regularly - than the places paulh mentioned. the west coast and japan sea coast are very seasonal.
japan has three big international surfing contests a year. two, including the biggest, are in chiba. the other is in aichi, just south of nagoya, although this year a return will be made to miyazaki. |
