Cool ni men hao ma? I hope that all of you are doing well.

I thought that the following results were interesting...of course we don't know much about the survey;perhaps some of you can read the article on the original magazine site?

BUT: here is the article as posted on the Taipei Time site.

Taiwan Quick Take: Southerners are more lonely

Wednesday, Mar 29, 2006
An average 12.3 percent of people living in the metropolitan areas of Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung experience a sense of loneliness and emptiness, or 1.07 million people, according to the results of a survey released yesterday.

The "loneliness index" survey, conducted by the magazine Global Views Monthly, showed that people in the south were lonelier than those in the north, with 14.9 percent of respondents in Kaohsiung experiencing loneliness, compared with 12.7 percent in Taichung and 11 percent in Taipei.

In addition, men were more susceptible to loneliness than women, the survey indicated. By age, people in the 20-24 age group and those above 70 were the loneliest, followed by those in the 40-44 age group.

Confused

so...what does that have to do with TEFL?

Would a higher score on the "loneliness index" indicate a larger market for language schools who can market English language study as a form of social interaction?
Are you ready for Friday night hip-hop language class? Razz Mad

Would a higher score on the "loneliness index" indicate a more depressing place for EFL/ESL teachers? (It is hard enough to get over culture-shock for some people!) Are these scores reflected in higher alcohol sales? Shocked

Would a higher score on a "loneliness index" indicate a worse or better dating scene? Rolling Eyes

Have I spent too much time thinking about this study?
Should I get back to work before my boss fires me? Laughing Wink Laughing

Laughing hmmm.... no, but bored at work? yes.

I am fascinated by the behavioral sciences....perhaps the post was not appropriate for this forum.

I was trying to be funny. Perhaps a smiley face would have helped. Laughing
