My boss make it a practice to keep all the Foreign Expert Certificat Books (Red Books) I recently needed mine to apply for a credit card. He handed it over to me. My question I know that the FEC Book should be in my possesion. However, should I return it when I finish with it. I feel that I should have it. I don't want to make a big stink about it. The other ten teachers don't seem to mind and have allowed them to keep it. They have asked for me to return it. For those working in China please weigh in. Thanks |

Point out gently that you need this red book whenever you want to change RMB into $ or to transfer money to your home country. Give some reason why you have to do this regularly. Say that it will be terribly inconvenient for the school to keep giving the book out and collecting it back. Smile politely at whatever they say and don't commit yourself to returning the book.
And then, just keep the d@mn thing and don't give it back. 'Forget' again and again to bring it in to school, if need be. Go on doing this until they stop asking. |

Seriously, it is yours, unless they need it for visa purposes. All the documents should be in your hands. My boss has all of mine at the moment to process my Z visa and after that he just gives them back to me. No question about it. We have done this for 3 years now. |

acwilliams, that is truly the sage advice of an old China hand.
Justateacher, how can the rest of your staff be such sheep? |

Can you legally take the red book with you when you change to another University or school and keep on using it, or can your school or University legally keep the book? Or do you get a new book when you change schools in the same Province? |
