Hello all, Ive been reading the posts for a while, and they are very helpful. I had a question not specifically related to teaching, but rather being a student in Mexico. Is anyone out there studying Spanish, or any other subject, in a Mexican university? And to clarify, Im not looking for study abroad students who do it through their home university, nor people in Spanish for foreigners classes (Ive found those to be a complete ripoff), but rather folks who have enrolled directly into a Mexican (or Central American) university. What are your thoughts? Was the paperwork a complete nightmare? How much does it cost?
Thanks so much! |

What are you looking to study? I think to study at all in Mexican universities, you should already be very proficient in Spanish. (or are you referring to Spanish literature?)
That being said, it would make a lot more sense therefore to ask a Spanish "bulletin board" forum about universities in Mexico.
I have heard Mexican schools are expensive for foreigners.
If your spanish isn't that good, you might want to look into a university in Belize.

I've been looking at doing a distance degree: studying with correspondence/online materials. The trouble is that even the cheaper programs are quite expensive when you're earning a Mexican salary... |

Several years ago, I actually looked into attending a Mexican university. It is possible to do, but you need to be on the ground in mexico, speak Good Spanish and visit the schools yourself. I contacted several private universities in Mexico City and all were anxious to have me enroll at their school. I also know of an American girl who enrolled and completed a Master's at UNAM.
About Central America, I know of a couple of Americans who enrolled at the National University in Honduras. The cost was just $250 per semester, so not very expensive. Again they were on the ground in Honduras and had good Spanish skills.
If you really want to make something like this work, just take off to your country of choice for 6 months to brush up on your language skills and then find a university that will accept you and that you can afford. |

In my experience...I went to school at ENAP (a branch of UNAM) for fine arts. First they wanted to charge me about $1000 to take the classes, then I decided to go talk to the teachers and they let me into their classes for free. I did take one class through the school and paid about $400. What did I get for doing it the official way? Not a library card (that took about 3 months. I got a student ID and a certificate. Once completing the course my records were 'lost' and now I really have no record of this. I am not really an advocate of trying to be an official student. I am not sure if UNAM would treat this very differently, (since ENAP is a branch of it) but be prepared for bureaucracy. Being sent to different offices with limited hours in scattered locations that may or may not yield results. And if you want it to be official set it all up in advance so you are not 'lost'....
hope it helps! |
