Best way to advertise as a private Eng teacher in BKK
A question for English tutors and Private teachers working in the central BKK area.
How do you advertise your services (other than word of mouth), of course?
Is there a bulletin board or classified somewhere online that students check often? Is there a service or online newspaper that posts free ads? Where is the best place to advertise homemade flyers in BKK?

^ You'll wanna be a little discreet, imho.
Teaching privates is technically illegal, and an immigration official
(or an anal school manager) could take interest in your legal status.
There's no need to be paranoid, but flyers and ads attract attention.
It's much safer to reply to an advert than to post one yourself.
These 3 websites should keep you busy:
Ajarn.com // TEFL Asia // TheJobPro.com
Thailand teaching and travel resources available here :::: The Master Index Thailand :::: |

Stand in the middle of Siam with a homemade sandwich board across your torso.....that should do the trick! |

You will probably have a lot of competition. Good luck with this. |

Mr K does have a point about being a little careful, they probably wont be that bothered but if they wanted to then you would be out of line.
There are many private school type operations run from teachers homes etc and when I opened one I went to see a local official and told him what I was doing and he said it was fine as I'd gotten in touch and introduced myself and they knew who I was. The only thing he told me NOT to do was to advertise outside of the location itself as then they would have to do something about it. Thai teachers do this all the time to make an extra buck and it happens in all subjects.
In terms of recruiting students for your little enterprise I found that a little commission to a thai colleague to spread the word helped and also university students were a good source for me and I would give discounted lessons to a person who brought me a group of five people, free lessons for ten. Word of mouth is often the safest most hassle free way to do stuff like this but obviously you have to start somewhere.
Ultimately you chance your arm to some degree and hope for the best.
Its worth approaching companies as well as targetting universities and dont forget the tourist trade either, there are loads of small operations who could do with their staff improving their english and thus being able to deal with tourists more effectively thus helping the business to grow.
My back alley classroom for patpong bar girls still makes me laugh a lot everytime I think about it!!!
Best of luck
