Tens of thousands probably. If not hundreds, given how long they've been going. China isn't the best example, since the demand for teachers is so huge there that the schools can't afford to be picky. But nevertheless, many teachers there have the CELTA.

ok, a more better question would be; How many ppl enter TEFL and how many ppl actually have CELTA/TRINITY certificate in the TEFL job role over other TEFL 4 week courses offered by other providers that are certified with say COT, or accred by UK universities ect.

E.G for example there are 4 million ppl worldwide teaching TEFL how many ppl in your opinion own CELTA if CELTA is so im/un-important.

Let's put it this way: I've never heard of anybody having a fake certificate which was anything other than a CELTA or Trinity.

Quite!

Trust those who know. CoT (or CoP as it was) is marginal to say the least.

In China you don't even need a degree.

I know two guys in Shanghai, who don't have degrees making over $2000US a month.

Not bad when you consider that you can get by on $300 a month.

But I'd still recommend getting the CELTA.

I've known people who have taught for years without it and they still haven't figured out some of the things I learned from the CELTA course.

Yet you should know that some trainers at IH Cracow can be arrogant about British English...

haha no no no, sorry if you guys got the wrong idea, prob my fault.

I was after this answer;.............How many ppl in the world do TEFL as their job but how many actually have a celta/trinity .

e.g there are 100 000 ppl as TEFLers, where only 20 000 have celta/trinity voer a 4 week tefl cert from tefl international ect,

CELTA/TRINITY is only badly needed I think for IH and western Europe, top private schools shall we say. Average private school in Poland will most likely be over the moon with a native with degree plus TEFL cert. plus maybe 2 months experience or something rather like that (going by my research).

So back to the question, anybody know? e.g in the world 10 000 000 are TEFL hwere only 500 000 have CELTA/TRINITY,,,,,,,,,,,

Hogwash. And in any case, wouldn't you rather work for something a bit better than an "average private school"

International House!!! Out of your league!!! They generally take new teachers, fresh from the TEFL like lambs to the slaughter and grossly underpay them.

The IH franchise group in London may think they're something special (*beep* knows why though, considering a large part of their operation is a lucrative immigration scam called 'intensive English courses" Laughing Laughing Laughing ), but the actual schools around the world are only as good as the people who owns them. And anyone with 3000 quid can get a franchise. They don't even trouble the franchisees with inspections.

It should be said that school owners are getting wise to this, hence IH is downsizing and having to move out of their flashy London offices to something "more economical". But that might equally be due to Poles, Czechs, Hungarians etc. no longer having to sign up for such things to be in the UK legally.

It really irks me when organisations like that, basically McDonalds but without the quality assurance systems, are held up to be some kind of benchmark of prestige.

Believe me Paul, CELTA or not, you could probably start from scratch somewhere MUCH better.

The British Council are another matter though. They actually ARE good.

Such as how to plan a lesson around one aim or goal. (I've seen guys in China teach 3 aims in one lesson, only leaving their students confused and frustrated.)

How to set up an activity.

How to generate interest.

Different ways to follow up a listening excerise.

Teaching people new vocabulary using collocations versus teaching them individual words.

Reviewing what was taught in the previous lesson, versus moving on to the next unit.

Understanding that different students learn through different methods.

Although I'm not a big fan of IH, I think all EFL teachers should start off with a CELTA.

Good times.
