Currently residing in the south (Jizan, KSA). According to the Saudis is the hottest place in the country (maybe the most humid, if theres a difference here). Telling my plans to buy and ship a car, specifically a Toyota from the states, I was then advised to buy a car here instead since cars here are built for the Saudi weather. Having my mind set to buy the car from the states because it would be cheaper, the local Saudi explained that the size of the Toyota radiator built for Saudi has 3 hoses leading into the radiator (I guess for more coolant) in contrast to 1 hose for a Toyota built for the U.S. Just want to know whether I would be at risk of my built for American car overheating here in Saudi.
I admit that I havent seriously looked for a car here, but could anyone tell me the best city to buy a car.
Thanks,
Saif |

Dear Mr Sword
Have you investigated
1. THE COST OF SHIPPING
and
2 THE PAPERWORK INVOILVED IN IMPORTING A CAR
???????????????
Once you have done that you will probably make the rational decision to buy a car here. Jeddah is the best place to buy. |

DON'T! You'll get hammered for import tax unless you've got plenty of wasta somewhere. Dammam is by far the cheapest place to buy a car, especially second hand. If you want a new one, leasing is your best bet nowadays. |

Buying a car from the States is crazy! Just get one here; it will probably be the same price before shipping.
The only time it is worth importing a car to Saudi is when you have a nearly new car in another Gulf country. And even then the paperwork is horrendous. |

Have only done the first of the three. I think it involves dealing with a freight forwarder and there are plenty in the states (who to trust!). Two and three were only an afterthought since no one around me could tell me for sure what is going to be involved and how much. There were many Saudis that I knew who had taken the route of transporting their cars after completing their graduate studies in the states. So I am confident that the cost of buying a used car in the states is far less cheap than buying the same car in Saudi (consider the American viewpoint of depreciation). Buying one new is not worth it in my opinion. Since my first post I have spoken to an American who suggested Dubai. Mentioned the radiator deal and he did explain that if bringing a car from the states, that the radiator would have to be replaced with one fit for Saudi consumption. It seems like too much of a hassle to save an unknown amount of dollars.
The people of Jizan do in fact suggest Jeddah (Dammam is too far) so Ill guess I would spend my vacation time in the states relaxing and deal with buying a car when I come back. Or would looking for a car now be a good time?
Thanks for your responses,
Saif |

If you're buying a second-hand car in Saudi it is better to do it before the summer holiday as prices are as much as 20% cheaper.
Make sure you have somewhere safe to store it though. The odds of it being vandalized are quite high, and car theft in Saudi is rampant. |

There is a difference between a Saudi importing one and you importing one. Regulations are different and there is also the WASTA factor. As a foreigner you are wasta-deficient.
Buy one locally - believe me and otherposters here. You will save yourself much grief, pain and frustration. Not to mention a lot of money. |

Hi,
Sorry to hijack - but how would you go about looking for a car in Jeddah? We're currently looking to buy one soon and have no idea how to buy one here or find who is selling one.
Thankyou! |
