Remember the old adage? "If you can't do, teach"
"and if you can't teach, teach P.E."
"and if you can't teach P.E., Tefl"
Only joking, but you know where I is coming from innit

This guy sounds no different than many football players or drummers back home. I have seen many mundane, average, drummers have cute girls swarming them back in the U.S.

Well, then they've got a TEFL career to fall back on in case their athletic or musical ambitions don't work out!

They don't need to be able to teach to get a job. One could last a long time in this business without any skill.

Indeed. One recent co-worker of mine often commented that he'd been teaching English for 10 years. However, if you talked to him at any length (or more accurately, let him babble at you) you'd discover that he'd also worked at about a dozen different schools in that time, and none had ever put up with him for more than a year.

Thankfully, we managed to get rid of him after 4 months; he was so terrible to both students and staff that I'm amazed the administration put up with him for that long!

So, are you saying that if you are re-hired by a school you are a good teacher?

Not necessarily. The school might be desperate for teachers.

Well, let's put it this way: if a school is willing to offer a teacher a second contract, he/she probably isn't absolutely horrible...

If I was doing the hiring and an applicant had never worked at the same school twice, that would raise a red flag. And if that applicant had worked at ten different schools in ten years, that'd raise two.

The Happy Tefler
Spends his years wandering the globe(therby fulfilling his long held ambition) meeting people and getting paid to talk to them in his own language. Is sober and well dressed, always sunny and positive with ner a care in the world. Is popular with students, management and fellow teachers. Always helpful. A wonder on quiz nights. Has long ago fulfilled his dream of learning another language and is currently on his third. His friends back home can't believe the exotic beauty he takes home- even though he makes it a strict rule never to date students tho' boy has he been tempted!. Has worked hard and studied hard(having to pay for the courses himself) and is currently doing his MA in apllied ling. part time. Has visited 4 continents and over 25 countries.
He thinks he is part of a noble profession and is proud of his job.

Who has been following my life? Wait I remember now, I've only visited 3 continents and about 20 countries Wink ! Sunny, well, my students do say I can block the sun Razz !

Tempted, well, I think I may have strayed Twisted Evil .

Actually I am proud, I feel our students do benefit, though I don't think the university management always feels that way.

I do believe I recognize myself...
I've lost count of how many schools I've worked for in the last 5 years. I worked in a rural area in France where there were no other native speakers (the closest they got to it was probably New Zealand lamb or British beef) and rarely worked in the schools themselves. I drove from factory to company spreading my wisdom: my students loved me (not wanting to blow my own trumpet, but I did get great feedback and my students definitely improved), but when the contract had finished and no government subsidies were coming in, the schools couldn't give me any more hours.
I am not alone. About an hour's drive away, a couple of hard working Brits were trying to make ends meet the same way.
So, it all depends on the situation.

The lonely abroad average or less guy who believes all the stuff the local gals tell him. "Damn those more honest women back home." he thinks.

After the ring is on she begins to "forget" her English and things take a turn for the worst but it's too late for him to go home or she won't go now though she said would before.

Better the devil you know. Twisted Evil
