|
|
Greetings. I'm currently teaching in the States (Social Studies - 6-12 certification) and am considering the UK (if Japan doesn't work out). I would like to teach as a regular FT employee (Public or Private) in/around London. . . . . how the hell does one go about finding/landing a job there?!?!? I could really use some direction on how to get started, etc. .
Thank you in advance. |

You could try reading some of the threads posted on this site that will give you all the information you need. scroll down the page and look it is all there. once you have a more speciific question based on the knowledge you have gleaned therein and consider working in the uk seriously as a well paid employment opportunity ask again.
all the best, |

Dear MrCAPiTUL,
I think you first need to establish whether you have the legal right to seek employment in the UK in order to get the work permit/visa etc.
Do you have any connections to either the UK or EU in terms of marriage or family? Quite what the full position is regarding Americans status to work here, I don't know. Maybe other posters can help. (though you will notice that strangely this is one of the least active forums at Dave's and people don't post for weeks on end sometimes)
We do seem to have many Aussies and Kiwis teaching in our state schools, often as supply teachers, especially here in London, where there are always such jobs- for very good reason. Nobody wants to have to deal with behaviour problems 90% of the time with obnoxious, abusive and indolent students. I did that for 5 years. Then I escaped to 'real teaching' and the, in-comparison, idyllic world of TEFL. |

probably a better place to ask this question might be the staffroom forum on tes.co.uk.
tes is the "times educational supplement", a weekly suuplement that comes with the times newspaper, dealing with education issues. they have a website which has, among other things, a discussion board. (they also have a related jobs website tesjobs.co.uk.)
one of the threads on the staffroom is "overseas trained teachers". check it out. |

I'm American too and have also looked into this.
There are many different routes into teaching in the UK. Because you are a qualified teacher in the States, you should have no problem finding a job.
The UK is desperate for teachers (especially secondary school teachers) and many schools will assist you in obtaining a work permit.
(NOTE: I'm talking about public school education, NOT TEFL!)
Check out the 'Graduate Teacher Training Registy' (something like that!) on the internet. You can find out details there. |

If I teach in England I will not teach English language. Rather, I'd teach one of the Social Studies (Geography, History, Civics, Economics, etc.).
Szeliczka, thank you for the information. Definitely appreciated. Are you currently looking for gainful employment in England? How is that coming for you (if you are looking, that is)? |

I've pretty much dropped the idea of teaching in "real" school and actually looking into other alternatives for myself in the UK right now, so I can't really give you any advice based on my own progress.
From everything I've heard, though... you shouldn't have a problem.. but start the application process for September NOW! |

I just think it fair to warn you that unless you want to work in central London there aren't many history jobs floating around due to the massive number of people who want to teach it, and we don't teach civics or economics in high schools in the UK, but definitely check out TES- very helpful website!
Good Luck |
