Just wondering what a good salary is nowadays in Russia, in the big cities. Is 700 USD with rent and taxes taken care of enough to save up a bit and have a good time? Just wondering. Thanks for any help. Take care.

As in my reply to your earlier post this is about what I earn but it doesn't sound like much for Moscow say. I've no desire to teach in Moscow but I'm sure you could exect significantly more there. It all depends on where you want to live, you can probably treat European Russia as a separate country compared to Siberia for earnings.

Hi,

I earn this amount in Moscow. And.... yes it's enough. If you went out on the beer 3-4 days a week you would spend it all. But this isn't really that possible as you teach most evenings. I have a pretty decent lifestyle here i don't tend to eat out much in restaurants much but i do go out to a few pubs and a club every friday and saturday and i save about 5000 rubles (100 quid) a month. Some of my friends don't, they just spend it all. Besides i understand which school is probably offering you this and you have other money given to you that accumulates at the end of the contract e.g flight reimbursement, any untaken holiday, accummulating bonus, visa costs. This alone adds up to a short holiday in the summer and what you save on top could be considered a bonus. In a 9 month period i'd expect to save at leat $1000 the these extras on top take it to about $2000, hope this helps.

Ditto to tedder. Siberiamad is off base, you are not going to get more than this in Moscow for a junior position at any school (except BC, and if you had been able to get a job with them you wouldn't be asking this question).

What exactly is this supposed to mean? How do you know that I havent been offered a job with them or that I have even applied yet? I just wanted to know what was an average or good salary in russia

That was a jab at BC, not you. BC pays well over $700/month, so clearly the job you have in mind is not with them. A lot of BC people consider themselves a "cut above" and look down on BKC/LL and their employees.

No worries. I am just trying to find something in Russia at a good school that will allow me to experience life, do some mountain climbing and save a bit. I have lots of experience, 3+ and am a certified FCE and CAE examiner with IELTS experience, so am trying to keep my options open. Thanks again for all the help. With this experience, should I go for and be able to get a senior teaching position? Take care.

Hi Supertraveller,

You should be able to live ok on $700 plus a flat- especially if this is just spending money, though don't expect to save.

We know you haven't been offered a position with the BC because as Canuckie said, they pay a lot more than that. They also don't recruit at this time of year. Not sure I agree with them looking down on LL/BKC though, as most of them used to work there!

By the way, 3+ years is not that much experience in Moscow and I think it's very interesting that you are an examiner as most of the time you are not allowed to be an examiner with such little experience.

I am not sure what you mean by "Senior Teacher" position but of you are looking for a contract and flat paid for etc, $700 seems realistic. Of course you can earn more off-contract but this is impossible if you are a newcomer to Moscow.

BKC has "senior teachers" who are sort of between a regular teacher and an ADOS. I think I've seen postings advertised on ihworld. For sure they get a bit more money, and perhaps they may get single accommodation. So certainly you can ask them to consider you for such a position, the worst that can happen is that you'll only get a regular teacher's job.

As for experience, I know teachers who had their DELTA when they had been teaching for three years. And for examiners, think you had to have two or three years after your CELTA. What are my chances of getting a job with the BC and if so, when do they recruit? And which schools give cambridge exams? By comments on here, I assume everyone in Russia has lots of experience. Thanks again for the information.
