Someone else will reply, but my understanding was that you go in as a tourist and find a job and then obtain the ARC (legally, before you begin working). I think you'd only have to make a visa run if you didn't find work before your tourist visa ran out.
I gather that landing visas are rather brief in duration but a standard one should be enough time to find work. |

Im eager to give Taiwan a try, after having already taught in Korea, Laos, and now in Turkey. But having to do visa runs seems expensive and risky to me. I mean risky in that if they dont let you back in then all the stuff i left in my hostel room or apt will be lost forever. |
I had a job arranged, but didn't start the ball rolling until I arrived. I had a 60-day visa and managed to get the whole ARC processed in just over a month.
You may want to sort out a job before you come, or at least arrange for a few interviews during the first few days after you arrive. If you get here and then start to look for a job, you may end up running out of time on your visa and having to do a visa run.
The whole ARC can be processed in about 30 to 45 days, assuming that the school you are with is on the ball with things. |

Oh, and make sure you get a 60-day visa. A two-week landing visa or 30 day visa isn't long enough to ensure you won't need to do a visa run.
You will need a round-trip ticket (or a one-way ticket here and another one-way out to another place, or whatever), proof of funds (can't remember how much this is...maybe about US$1000?), and there may be other requirements, so contact TECO to find out what they are. Most importantly, do not tell them your intentions to teach here. Say you will be touring/visiting friends/etc. |
