I've seen a few of you talk about having bikes, but what about cars?

What can you get a reasonable car for in Jakarta now? I'm not talking new, but something that is at least reliable.

Anyone know of any good mechanics?

Thanks.

Every second hole in the wall is a 'so-called' mechanic; whether they are any good is another thing!

I'm also interested in buying a used car - jeep type vehicle, so any advice would be appreciated by myself also.

Licence - don't 'really' need one.

Insurance? I don't know

SIM not necessary - either pay the Polisi 20.000rp when they stop you OR don't pay them at all.

I don't pay them.

Not had many replies on this as yet, so I'll ask a follow-on question.

Does anyone know of a good second-hand car yard? My budget is max of 50 million, but closer to to 30 if at all possible. Like I say, as long as it runs well, has some AC and doesn't look like it's held together with rubber bands and glue, suits me fine.

Thanks guys.

i am also looking to buy a car in that price range. after talking to multiple bules and indos and going to car lots this is what i have found out. when buying from a dealer, the price may or may not include having the title and regristration put in you name included the 3% tax and police registration papers. sometimes there are extra fees due becuase prior to this year, the police were really lax about making people transfer the title/regis and some extra back taxes/fines may be imposed. not sure if u need to have your emissions done prior to transfer of title, but they are calling for that to be done every six months. as in our home countries, cars on a dealership are usually more expensive than private sales. there is supposed to be a lot of dealerships in the kebayoran area, at least of couple of blocks of them. have a mate that knows and if u pm me i will try and find out for u.

other advice, look in the saturday editions of the pos kota and kompas newspapers. i am currently focusing on the suziki katana.... jeep like vehicle.... as i have found prices ranging from 30 to 45 million for years 95 to 99. also, most insurance companies repair vehicles once a year, so bring a mechanic with u to check out the car before u buy might be a good idea. seems the going rate is 50 to 100,000rp. the only problem with private sales is running to and fro in all that traffic. but indos love to wake up early and sunday morning might be a good bet. good luck

Seriously, I don't pay.

I've been stopped maybe a dozen times. I just tell them I don't have a SIM but I would like one. So, if they want to take me to the main police station I will be happy to buy a SIM. They just advise me to go get one myself as they can't be bothered. It also helps to tell them that you don't have any money on you and that you'll need to go home to get some (which is FAR away of course).

atoz is going for just over 100 million. other similiar cars such at the kia piccanto just went up to 107. the toyata avanza is 111. these are the fully loaded models. it is possible to get the stripped down versions for about 10 million less. the xenia is the exact same as the avanza but about 3 million less. honda getz and similiar cars are 140 million and up. a couple of other models are available for less than 100.

u can go to car malls........ like the one in kelapa gading and semanggi..... and they have showrooms for most of the manufacturers of cars. also, sheets with car prices and financing is available, so u dont really have to speak/read bhs indo to understand most of it. financing it nearly impossible for bules.

also, there is a bi-weekly used car magazine published that includes pics of the car and usually includes the price as well. it cost 9,500 up. the name is mobil depo.

good luck

why not just go get a license? it takes about an hour and costs 100,000 rp? then u dont have to worry about saying you left your atm card at home.

also, what car are u talking about for 45 million? those new bajai replacement vehicles cost 45 million. and a 10 year old motorcycle costs 2.5 million.

Never been asked for my ATM card - but I was once asked for a tin of tuna Smile

I went to the auto mall in JKT - Honda CBR 1000 280.000.000rp

60% of that price covers the 'papers' you need to ride it legally in Indonesia.

But judging by the amount of big shiny bikes parked up waiting for service, there are plenty of people in JKT with money to spare.

A few years ago, I attempted to buy a new motorbike just after arriving in Jogya.

I was told that without a KIMS proving that I lived and worked in Jogya, I could not buy in that city. Seems there's some sort of protection to stop people in other cities buying out of town, but can't imagine why.

As I knew it would take months before I got my KIMS, I bought a 2nd hand bike.

As far as licences go, I obtained an International Driving Licence in Australia for $10.00, and used this when stopped, which was at least weekly. Just before its expiry, I asked at the local Jogya police station if I could obtain a licence there, but I was asked for Rp500,000, which I declined. The RAC sent me up a renewal licence for $10.00 plus postage.
