I think it would be helpful to know what kinds of educational background and work experiences the people posting on the Japan job forum have.
The results of this poll may be useful to help gauge the type of responses given. For example, I've read posting where members are confused and infuriated with the non-renewal of contracts, while others seem to see this as part of regular company politics. Some members despise the Big 4 companies, while others find them as a welcome opportunity into Japanese culture and life.
Perhaps a better view of our range of education and work experiences can help temper reactions to different questions or postings (it would be helpful for me, at least). Perhaps not.
Thanks! |

you dont include where people are working and how long they have been in Japan. Someone working five years in Japan will have a different viewpoint than a newbie starting their first job. |

Flo, forgive me if you've already stated this but, concerning your Japan experience, I was wondering what's the least you could get out of it and still be satisfied as well as what's the most you could get out of it and be satisfied? Nobody really knows what they'll be doing 2, 3, or more years from now, but do you think there's a good chance you could be here for quite a bit of time, or are you pretty sure you'll head home after a year or two?
I have a BS with more than 2 years teaching experience back home. I've worked at one of the big 4 eikaiwa gakkou as well as in the public schools. The eikaiwa situation was OK. The other teachers were pretty cool for the most part, the company always took care of us if we needed anything, and I came to like a lot of the students. However, the work can be draining if you have to teach during all periods every day. You might find the most rewarding part of eikaiwa teaching to be kids teaching if you like having the freedom to run your classes your way. With the adults it can be mind-numbing sometimes. With those classes you feel like you're not drawing from your education and teaching experience as much as you're just using your natural ability to speak English. But you will grow as a teacher. You'll learn what works and doesn't and you'll become better at facilitating group participation because the eikaiwas want you to get the students involved.
I work in public schools now and have a less stressful work schedule. I have complete control over my elementary school classes and I'm drawing upon my education and work experience more with this job than the eikaiwa job. But, I'd consider working at an eikaiwa gakkou again, even if I'm overqualified. Many who do such work are overqualified. |
