Hi all,
Can anyone tell me what career prospects are like for foreigners teaching Enlighs in China? I've wanted to go and work in China for the last 4 years but I was at university. Now i've finished study I can finally go, but its proved alot harder to get a job here in Britain than I thought, as so many people having degrees now and experience seems SO important. With this in mind, is it wise to go and work in China considering we need a secure future? Where can, or does, teaching Eniglish over there lead to?
Thanks. |

I pretty much came here for a change of scenery. Also from the UK I found it hard getting a job at least getting one I liked. One day I thought what the hall, I'm still young, I have no comitments, I will go traveling. My initial plan was to go from country to country working for a year and move on. There was nothing special about China, it just so happened I found a job here first.
Now, I can tell you, my first year here was tough. Some of the posters here may remember the problems I had, homeless, jobless, no visa etc... And a lot of people ask we why I am still here, anybody else would have left as soon as they could. The simple answer is, I love China and I love teaching. It was never my plan to make a career of teaching, but that is what I have ended up doing.
My point is, don't come to China with expectations. Things may work, they may not. Your first visit should be planned for a year, and always have something to fall back on. |

| Very good and useful info, thanks alot all. But i also wonder why people go to teach in China when they have better prospects in the states or UK or wherever. However I understand it wasn't planned exactly for voldermort! |

Boredom. I have a good job in the computer industry and I'm bored silly.
They say that the average person does a couple complete career changes within their lifetime and I don't want to f-up those statistics.
Humans tend to do their best work when they are passionate about something...I think when your heart is no longer in your work then it is time to move on. I know for a fact that China will get boring at some point....can always go back home or try a third career. |
