Sorry for such a basic request.

I know next to nothing about the teaching world in HK.
I shall soon learn within the year.

What does NET and PNET stand for?

Are they anything like the JET system here in Japan?
The JET system, from what I understand, hires fresh University graduates who travel to Japan on a contract, furnished apartment with very very low rent payments. The JETs come from North America as well as Aust. and NZ, to work in the public schools, usually team teaching.

The govt. here has decided to close this system down because it is just too expensive, and the grads have no experience what so ever in teaching ESL.
They are now starting to contract out from local English converstation schools, getting not only teachers with the experience, but at lower pay rates.

So, if I have any of this correct, you have (in HK) private teaching (as in the traditional coffee shops), English Conversations Schools, the public schools, businesses and Universities for teaching at. Is this correct so far?

Thanks for your help.

NET stands for Native English Teacher

PNET stands for Primary Native English Speaker

The HKSAR government hires overseas teachers and places them directly into schools, from what I understand. PNETS often will work at two schools, alternating weeks. The schools can be anywhere in the territory.

From what I understand, accomodation is not provided, but a housing allowance is given on top of your salary. There is also a bonus scheme for completion of your contract (2 years).

In order to qualify, I think you need at least a PGCE or an Education degree, plus CELTA (or else a commitment to complete it within the next year) and two years solid, verifiable experience (although I might be slightly wrong there - check out www.netscheme.org.hk for details).

On the lower end of the pay scale (and typically with virtually no holiday and a lot of weekend work) you have various language centres and Kindergartens who hire native teachers too, and are less picky about qualifications and experience.
