Language schools and Institutions who offer/promise you employment and then let you down after 2 weeks of waiting are almost as bad as TEFL teachers who do a runner after less than a day!!
This industry really is full of Gary Cooper wannabees!!
I now have no guilt or remorse for the two TEFL jobs i have walked out on in my life.
They are more than matched by the liars and creeps who leave you hanging out on a line waiting to fly out somewhere only to be told...'oh we don't need a teacher now'....!!!
Unprofessional..and they are the ones supposed to be setting an example!!!!! |

All good reason to never bank on one position. Keep your irons in the fire until you get on the plane - and maybe even after that. |

I'd like to think that if you did a runner it was because they had more than earned it. No need to feel guilty about that, imo.
As someone with a fascination with economics and libertarian philosophy, I find the market for overseas English teachers very fascinating. You see more 'market' activity in these positions (even in ostensibly communist countries) than you see in employment in the US. It'd make for an interesting study, I'm sure. |

It cuts both ways. The university where I work (IMHO a pretty decent place) has been left hanging in the wind more than a few times by teachers who have agreed to come - and then never showed up as planned. Cold feet, a better offer, who knows? Often, they never even bother responding to email queries to check if they are okay.
As you say, there are plenty of liars and creeps in this industry - and that includes both schools and teachers. |

After 92, like other commie lands, Cambodia's economy flipped overnite from command to free.
i dont know much about it, but i talked to some people who worked for non-governmental organizations who had to deal with suppliers and negotiations and so on, and they said it was a wacky experience. It was a purely free economy then, and perhaps still is in many ways, so if you want to study a market where the rules as we know them do not apply, then check out
Cambodia. Try it and see. |

Anyway I wrote a nice letter to the offending miscreant the other day telling him via e-mail exactly what I thought of him and his bogus offers of employment. I don't think he'll be in touch again unless it's through a libel lawyer!!
No suprise really that he was looking for teachers with 2 months of the term left....the previous ones had obviously put up with enough of his heavily scented cow manure and were unable to mentally or physically see out the final two months of their contracts!
The thing with other irons in the fire is that you let someone down which isnt very nice but i take your point Ted. |
