Right now, I'm just focussed on getting in. Dating is the furthest thing from my mind. Really and truly, my preference of NOT wanting to date Asian men is really not as big of an issue as everyone on here seems to think it is Wink . I'll be fine Smile .

OK. I hear ya. Keep up the positive attitude! Smile

My wife and I are both Canadian. She spent the first 5 years of her life in the UK, so I guess she could be classified as a foreigner.

How can you not see the deliciousness of Asian guys? Yum. If you don't want yours, I'll take em! Very Happy

I am sitting here thinking the opposite things from you: I am headed to the US for a two week visit. How will I survive that long without being surrounded by Asian hotties?? Heheh oh well luckily I am going to San Francisco. There are a few Asian people there I think. Wink

<----Taking Asian men and handing them over to Kdynamic. Knock yourself out!! Very Happy

Why don't I see the "deliciousness" of Asian men? Probably cause I'm Asian myself so I like looking "elsewhere" Laughing . Besides, they aren't attracted to me either so it's a win-win situation. And yes, I know that for a fact.

There will be TONS of Asians to choose from in San Fransisco. Just go to Chinatown.

As far as my experience goes, most newbies that go to work for the big eikaiwa companies end up sent to places other that the major cities like Tokyo, Yokohama, or Osaka. Usually after a year or so it's a lot easier to transfer to cities like those. That's just what I've seen, though. Your experience could be entirely different and I hope I don't come off as being negative. Just a little heads-up based on my experience. Don't think I could dampen your spirits, anyway (and certainly don't want to Wink ) Sometimes I wonder if the reason why I and lots of other people got shipped off to smaller towns initially is that we just weren't cool enough to get assigned to a big city Sad .

Take care, Jazz.

From what I've heard about ECC, they are good at accomodating people's requests (heard it from someone who posted on another thread). Not sure about GEOS. With regard to ECC, their branches are mainly in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. That was why I said that if I got in, I'm confident that I'll end up in Tokyo. However, when all's said and done, I am fully aware that I'll be placed based on where the jobs are available. So we will see...

Let's see, couples I know, Canadian with Canadian, British with American, American with American, etc. But of course, you see a lot of foreigners with Japanese as the majority of foreigners who stay on longer marry Japanese.

I know a Swedish/American couple, met and married in Japan. A Belgian/French couple, met and married in Japan. A Korean/American couple, and a few others. Most are scientists, and I guess those tend to hang out with their own kind.

Am engaged to a peruivan guy. There are heaps of hot and normal Peuvians or Brazillians there, they are there to work not because they are weird, have an obsession for asian girls or can't get laid in their own country unlike some (not all) male english teachers.

I know of plenty of Australian - Japanese matches, an Aussie - NZ match, an Aussie - US match heaps of mathces.

You mean meeting a native that speaks English with a British accent? Yeah it is sweet, you get all the benefits of J-nationality with the western mind-set.

Thanks Nomadder,

P.S. Cool avatar!

Just out of curiousity, what are the benefits of J-nationality exactly?

Well Hoser in my case it means that I don't have to deal with all the day to day things associated with running a household, i.e.; paying bills, doctor and dentist appointments, childrens' schooling, banking, taxes, insurance, etc. Not saying that these things require Japanese nationality but being Japanese makes it easier. I couldn't imagine having to do those things myself. But I think the main benefit for me was being able to purchase property. That and I am able to shirk the responsibility of mastering the language.

If I may ask you a question Hoser, what is the American equivalant of a Hoser?

Enjoy,
s

P.S. Almost forgot to mention the benefit of having a spousal visa. It is nice, particularly after having been deported and black-listed.

Montbell mentions scientists working in Japan. What about other non-English teacher foreigners you've heard of?

I remember a Russian in Niigata though don't remember what he did. There was a German brewmeister, a British glassblower. Another British in some sort of business in Tokyo. There were Israeli jewellery sellers.

Other than scientists, I also know foreign journalists, chefs, designers, artists, and actually, very few teachers. My husband is a scientist, and my first teaching job was at his institute (oh, the power of connections!). I never did the Nova circuit, and the few ESL teachers that I met, avoided me like their lives depended on it.

And as for scientists, Japan is famous for its plant molecular biology research, and there are many foreigners working there in that field.

The first women I met and dated with for about five months here in Japan was a Canadian.

She was working as a photographer/stylist.

That being said, we were the only Canadian/Canadian couple that had met here that I've ever known.
