Are there universities in HK that offer these programmes to study? I've looking at ones in OZ, but they cost double my salary.

baptist university and the hong kong institute of education offer these courses but you need to attend classes.

I'mlooking for a course that can be done completely by distance.

I would think it's pretty much impossible to do a PGCE or PGDE by distance learning as these courses usually involve a large amount of classroom-based work, observing teachers, observed teaching etc. If you do find one I wouldn't expect that it would be very well recognised by many employers. It's the same with TEFL, on-line TEFLs with no teaching practice are not usually well regarded/recognised by employers.

For a Masters degrees its often possible because to do them via distance learning as they are not usually practical teaching qualifications but more geared towards research etc.. BEd, PGCE, PGDE and TEFL courses are designed to develop practical teaching skills (within a theoretical framework) and hence need a teaching practice element.

also i would think that unless the course has a practical (teaching observation etc) component it won't be recognised by the EMB for the purposes of registering as a teacher.

University of Tasmania offers a Bachelor of Education (In-service) by distance or a combination of distance and Summer/Winter school. To be able to enroll in this course you must already be working as a LAT (Limited Authority to Teach) teacher or as a teacher aide in a primary or secondary school. You will need to provide evidence of your position in a school. You will also need to do an assessed practicum like everybody else.

Can someone please remind me what exactly is the difference between a PGDE and a PGCE? I had looked into them a few years ago, but now I've forgotten, and am considering setting out on applying for such a course in Hong Kong about a year down the line from now.

I also wonder if anyone here has taken the course in HK. Do you absolutely have to be working in a primary school if you are going to take the primary course? And, do you have to be working as a subject teacher instead of an ESL teacher when you do the course?
