in Hanoi in 2000, i just landed and got work within a few weeks. very cheap living costs, so it wasn't too risky. a pretty livable city, but not recommended for the single gentleman (unless he's into pros). it wasn't too hard to pick up journo jobs, and there weren't many cars, one could get around by bicycle and enjoy pleasant French colonial architecture.
i'm a freelance graphic artist/journalist and ESL teacher, so looking for a good fit for that. somewhere livable and not polluted.
cheers

I suggest Suzhou which is located in Jiangsu province. It's one of the cleaner cities in China and has plenty going on. |

Suzhou is a great place. I lived in Kunshan, which is 20 minutes away from Suzhou. I really enjoyed Kunshan because I could visit Shanghai and Suzhou any time I wanted. Kunshan's biggest advantage is it's location. Its population is about 1,000,000. Anytime you feel like escaping the Chinese lifestyle you can spoil yourself in one of the big cities. Also, Zhou Zhuang is just minutes away. |

fair sex? (Where is your pick for friendliest women (not pros)?)
nice laaadies: Japan, Korea or Taiwan?
Bulgaria, Ukraine,Poland or...?Teaching and art in E.Europe
best country in E. or Cen.Europe? culture,etc.

Henry give the guy a break. Unless he has a habit of flaming people I don't see a problem. I dreamed of teaching abroad for three years before I could actually get out there. |

I have actually taught in several different countries, and have used the site for 7 years, off and on. Henry seems to think he owns this site, and apparently he has a special hardon for me, i have no idea why. I know that when i used the forum for going to the Czech Republic in 99 and Vietnam in 2000, I never ran into any of the flamers that i have in the last year. It seems that as a site grows, it automatically attracts some nasty elements. The Korean board is even worse than this one, but i can see why Raoul's China forum and others are gaining popularity.
I've lived and taught in Brazil, Hanoi, Prague, Toronto,Vancouver, Montreal, and the Solomon Islands. Alone and without a net. I'm at the time in my life when i'd like to establish something more permanent, rather than a year or two here and there. And as i was given some bad advice from a poster on this site before i went to Hanoi, i am especially cautious. Is there any way to get a restraining order from this psycho Henry? GET YOUR OWN ****ING LIFE, YOU TOTAL ****ING W***ER!
To Saint 57 et al, sorry for that interruption, and thanks for your help. What is it like in Qingdao and Kunshan? Is there cycling, skiing, swimming, or any of that? What are work opportunities like?
cheers
Mick

I rode my bike for hours each day in Kunshan but I wouldn't call it good for cycling. Forget skiing. There is a swimming pool but it is expensive and I heard it's not good. PM me if you want the name of a good school. There are many work opportunities. There aren't too many foreigners so you're in high demand if you want to do privates (I didn't). I enjoyed my time there very much. |

I'd really like to know what this particular thread has taught mick_luna about China.
The responses so far include absolutely nothing about the sorts of things that mick_luna needs: for example, the state of the visual arts, writing, and journalism scenes from insiders who really know about those subcultures. And of course girls... Girls are always on mick_luna's mind. Expect a thread soon titled "dating scene in China?" |

Mick, I dare you to start this thread. We can watch Henry's head explode.

Actually, he does have a particular hard-on for you, but I wouldn't call him a psycho. He is easily pissed off but doesn't attack people (that I've seen). One thing I can guarentee is, wherever Mick goes Henry will be there.
3 is the over/under on how many more times saint57 can post on this thread before it vanishes (MOD). |

Suggestions for mick_luna's next thread:
"The artistry of anonymous Internet polling: facts, opinions, or bul-s-it?"
"What countries will appreciate an annoying Canadian who never stops pestering with the same questions?"
"Is there a counterculture arts scene in Taskhent?"
"Papua New Guinea or Swaziland: which has the better dating scene?"
"Can I buy Crayola crayons in Croatia???"
"Will you choose my next country for me? I really value the opinions of anonymous Internet posters!" |

I hope you guys aren't sick of me, yet. I've been lurking for a year and now have a plan that will get me overseas in another two (might wait for Dad to retire). I've debated countries and educational plans constantly that entire time.
It's a really big move...especially if you've already established a life/career (I'm 34). I have obligations to take care of, including a home to sell, before I go. I'd be really worried if someone didn't give the matter a lot of thought and preparation. |

Wow, Mr Misanthrope, aka Henry Cowell, that's some scary logic: since I was given bad advice by one poster, henceforth i should never again seek advice from posters on this site? and since i was treated badly by some people in the past, all people must be bad and avoided? with that attitude, i guess you'll be going postal and massacring your students, co-workers and neighbours any time now. i would say friends too, but i don't imagine you can make any with that mind-set.
i really feel for your poor students Mr Misanthrope, i just pray you aren't teaching them logic |

That's why you're still asking for advice from other anonymous posters?? I guess that makes perfect sense.
Screwed once -- blame "a poster." Screwed again -- blame thyself. Or blame Henry_Cowell, who's been dead for decades now.
Again: What exactly have you learned so far from your threads on these many forums? Where is the best place in the world for somebody who is heavily into the local arts scene? Where is the most vibrant creative-arts subculture? Have you learned these things from your anonymous correspondents?
I dearly want you to be HAPPY in the sixth country that you live in. I dearly want you to have EVERYTHING figured out before your departure. I dearly want you to be SUCCESSFUL in your next international experience. Because if you're not, you will have only me to blame -- and perhaps the dozens of other Dave's posters who gave you insufficient advice to protect you from life's uncertainties and foibles. |
