I meant to do this when I went back home but I never found a really good shop so I guess I have to pay the price now. I'm looking to pick up an english board game such as Monopoly or Risk or something like that. Anybody know if there are any places around here where I could find them?

I don't know whereabouts you are, but at least in Tokyo I've seen them at Shinjuku Tokyu Hands

I saw a Tokyo Monopoly with Roppongi Hills etc. The only place I have seen good board games from home is through the Foreign Buyers Club. FBC online.

Try amazon.com

Or amazon.co.jp

I buy all my foreign language books (texts for study too) from amazon.co.jp for the same price as the american and UK sites but pay no postage as the orders are counted as shipping from jp.

Why this works, I don't know, nor do I know how it works, but it does and it is cheap. Anything you look for on Amazon.com (I've even bought english language electronics devices) try a search for on amazon.co.jp.

If you can't read Japanese, no problem as the site has an English option on most pages (obviously reviews written in Japanese won't be in English and the extent of the information about the product etc - but for that you just cross reference the US or UK site).

And remember to shop around on amazon.co.jp - there are often huge price discrepancies (due to different editions and origin) - I bought a text for 4000yen. THe same book, the UK edition was 12,000 yen! Shocked

Hope that helps.

Thanks. Actually I'm just waiting for some books to arrive from Amazon today Smile I didn't realize I could buy games there too.

Just for future reference, Tokyu Hands completely sucks for boardgames. They had a bilingual version of Monopoly there if anyone is interested. They also had Settlers of Cataan but I dont know if it had english instructions. Perhaps only German and Japanese.

Try the Yellow Submarine stores. They tend to focus on the hardcore gamer stuff though so they might not carry very many casual games.
