It was developed through a U.S. Army program, need more be said?

The US Army is the last place a country should look when they need teaching methods!
I'd think twice about going to the Gulf then Keith, because the dreaded DLI material is alive and well in both Saudi and Kuwait.

It's such a fabulous method that there were proportionately more suicides at Monterey than at Vietnam.

So there are hundreds of million of people in India and China who can say' hello mister' and 'where from?' and "Beckham good'.

The people asked claimed to understand English. So that would indicate a slightly better grasp of the language than that. If you want any more in depth comment you'll have to e-mail India Today (published in English).

Also the vast majority will speak local varieties of English designed to operates as a neutral means of communication within India rather than mimicing a native speaker.

So what? Most of the population of the United States can say "oh, la, la" and "la plume de ma tante" but that doesn't mean Paris needs to worry the hegemony of the French language will come to reside in Idaho!

In Saudi you can get a starting salary of up to $2,800 at KFUPM and $3,300 at the Royal Commission. Companies routinely pay the same salary for EFL instructors, and if you can get to work for an Aramco contractor you should clear about $4,000 and more for British Aerospace (around $6,500 a month starting I believe) and not too much less for Raytheon.

Hmmm...looks like my salary estimates are a little dated. But then I don't really know the situation in Saudi well.

But if what you value above all else is having your kids perform well on standarized exams (which of course control access to top universities) then all of this international living was perhaps not the best thing. The best of both world's would have been to have my children attend one of the prestigious international schools here in Japan like the Canadian Academy, but that just wasn't financially possible.
