It has been consistent across the boad that it is highly recommended that one get to Costa Rica and then look for work. Has anyone experienced a problem with this? I ask because it is a huge risk to move there without a job when you are not guaranteed that you will find work. I am a single female and this concerns me. Any advice out there? Confused

I really dont think you have an option with this. You can try emailing all the unis, schools and agencies and i can pretty much guarantee you that the response will be thanks for your interest in our company, please contact us when you arrive.
Its just the way things are done here. There is a high demand for native speakers and you might have to hunt around to find the type of placement that you want but there are openings all the time.

It is a leap of faith but isnt that what makes life exciting? Very Happy
good luck
cheers

hi there,

yea i think i contacted every school before i came and they said the same... "call us when you get here. we look forward to meeting you"
i arrived in jan and scheduled millions of interviews before hand, which was totally unnecesary because the job i ended up taking was a school i passed by, walked in and asked them if they were hiring.. the next day i was a 5th grade full time teacher.

i recomend just having contacts of a handfull of schools and contact them when you come. language schools hire on going and are almost always looking for people. i havent heard of anyone having a problem finding a teaching job here. also, pay and amount of hours are low in coastal areas and higher in the central valley, san jose area.

any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me..... [email protected]
ive only been here 2 and half months but i might be able to help.

also........ i recomend you contacting people who live here in regards to finding out dangerous and not so dangerous areas. my second week down here i was robbed at gun point! and i was in an area i thought was ok. i had my laptop, digital camara, credit cards and tons of stuff taken from me.. but im happy i wasnt hurt.

irene

What an awful experience for you. Im glad you are alright and hope things are going better for you now.

This shows how careful we have to be here, or anywhere for that fact.

I dont carry credit cards unless im going directly to the mall and they are not in my purse but somewhere on my body.

I never carry my digital camera unless i am travelling to somewhere i need to take pics. AND i always remove the chip from the camera when travelling, i can replace the camera but not the pics.

A laptop is carried in a normal grocery bag, not a computer bag for all to see.

My money (what little i have! Rolling Eyes ) is also distributed about my body and in some places they dare not grab! Embarassed I also purchased a really cheap coin purse and put in all those useless silver coins that are only worth pennies. If asked to turn over my purse i will, and hope they dont open it till they get far away.

Hope everyone stays safe
cheers
