| Hello Everyone, I was wondering if I needed a TEFL certificate on top of a B.Ed to teach kindergarten students in places like Japan or HK? |

Not in my opinion, but some countries require a TEFL for a work permit--regardless of whether or not you are a licensed teacher. I think for that reason you'd be best off to do one at the beginning of your career and not have to worry about it again. |

For teaching kids in Japan, to the best of my knowledge, no.
For HK language schools - no - but public schools there can pay well and may require a certification from your state/province in their schools. |

If you already have a B.Ed. degree (as I do), that - plus any actual practical teaching experience that you have in the field you want to teach - ought to suffice if you want to teach kindergarten in such countries.
I also possess the Trinity Certificate in TESOL, though I got this qualification no less than 5 1/2 years after getting my B.Ed.! |

It certainly would be a good idea in the long run, even if you may end up teaching at places where they would certainly love to have you because you possess the certificate, but be aware that there is no guarantee whatsoever that you will necessarily be paid a higher amount of money (compared to those who don't have one), even if it would be only a slight increment on the baseline salary for those who have neither the experience nor the qualifications in TEFL.
Unlike jobs nowadays, a certificate is permanent - no-one can take that away from you and you can quite happily put that qualification on your resume for the rest of your days. It's a good investment, and I'm investing in an MA in Education more than 4 1/2 years after starting out as a bottom-rung TEFLer. |
