I am planning an itinerary for later in the year and wonder whether I should land in BKK and go straight to Udon or Chiang Mai and then return to BKK, or if I stay in BKK,is it easier now to get to Hualamphong or the airport than it used to be?
Any info (promos or warnings) on internal airfares and likely availability would also be great.

Really up to you! Wink

Getting to Hua Lamphong Train Station is a snap.

In fact, it's a station on the new MRT Underground.

Regarding airports - depending on when you arrive, you

may be landing at Suvarnabhumi, scheduled to open in July,

although the exact date has not been officially confirmed yet.

In combination with the BTS Skytrain's two lines,

getting around Bangkok is much easier these days.

re: regional airlines

Air Asia has some really low fares.

The other Thai & regional airline links are listed on

The Master Index Thailand @ the bottom of Part 1.

As Kent said its really up to you. I never spend more than a couple of days in BKK before heading to the other jewels such as Chiang Mai.
I found Banglampu/Khoa san to be a good point to get to other areas; last year there was an overnight bus to Chiangers for 150bht-300bht. And it was 80bht to Don Muang airport in mini van leaving on the hour every hour.

Ditto Kent, look at airasia.com

Goods lucks!!!
