Hello, I am Barbara and I am just studying for my TEFL Diploma. I havent got any teaching experience at all but I would like to get some here in London first and then go abroad and teach english. Only problem is that I am not a native speaker. Anyone got any ideas where I can get teaching experience? |

That's not really a LOT of questions! But, people here can help you more if you give us some idea of your education (do you have a degree?) and in what part of the world you might like to teach - those two things will make a big difference in what people might recommend. |

Well, not a lot of questions yet but I am sure there are more to come while chatting.
I dont really know I guess I would be intertested in teaching in Asia or South America, I havent seen that much of the whole wide world yet so I am not too fussed where to work.
No, I havent got a degree, I passed my A levels 5 years ago and since that I have been working in Customer services in Austria and London. Might that be a problem in finding a teaching job? |

Most countries that pay a reasonable income require a degree for a work visa (Japan, Korea Taiwan pay the best incomes). China you can get by if you have no degree but a non-native speaker may not get hired.
In Japan a non-native speaker needs a minimum of 12 years education taught in English. a university degree and a valid work visa.
Look for countries where a degree is not a requirement (I think countries like Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia come to mind. Mexico and Argentina i believe require degrees for your work visa.
PS what is your native language. With a degree you could teach your native language and teach English part time. |

skalett, how long have you lived in London? More important than being a native speaker is whether you have a British passport? You need a British passport, American, Australian, NZ, or Canadian passport to be eligible for a visa. A non-native speaker with a british passport has a better chance of finding a job than a native speaker with an Indian or Jamacian passport. Furthermore as stated before you need a degree to be able to work in many countries. With a British passport you may find work in South America or China. |

Thanks for your help guys!
I am Austrian and have been living in London for over 2 years, I havent got a british passport and I havent got a degree so it looks pretty bad for me, doesnt it?? I am a German speaker, do you think I could teach German here to get some experience, I am not sure if thats possible, guess it depends on the demand for german speakers!??
As I said I dont really mind where I am teaching as long as I do and get some experience, guess thats going to be tough for me. I am currently trying to get a part time teaching job for next semester and get some experience here in london first before heading off somewhere else. Any idea how to do that?? I have already registered with my Council and they hopefully will conisder me should they need teachers for the next semester. Anything else I can do?? |

Viel Erfolg,
James |

James,
It is nice to see some German on this board. However, I think if a foreign language is going to be used here then you should also translate it into English. Most people are not so familiar with German.
German version:
