Anyone have any experiences to share about working for the LSC schools in Canada? They have been recruiting regularly on this website and in the local papers, so I am just wondering if they are worth considering. |

Couple years ago when they were first setting up in Calgary, I sent in an application. I have Alberta Teachers of English as a Second Language Certification, a member of TESL Canada. They'd never heard of it and wanted a CELTA. They finally got back to me and said that would be acceptable but I decided to stay where I was.
I would think if you're planning on doing business somewhere, you'd know what the local TESL bodies are (and that an ATESL has stricter criteria than a CELTA) |

I have noticed that they advertise quite frequently as well. I wonder if that means they have a high turnover of teachers, and why...? |

Ths is just a guess but they might be goin with the "we'll offer you a contract at this very very little amount but it will go up in a few months" and then just get rid of the teacher when the time comes up and they start hunting that they want to earn more than absolute minimum wage for about a third of the work they do and nothing at all for the other two thirds. |

This might be true, but not in my case. I was recently hired to work at LSC Calgary. They pay a competitive starting wage with increases after a few months, provide an extra 15% for prep time of teaching hours, staff meetings, workshops, etc. are paid time. Not too shabby.
I suspect that they are recruiting teachers now in anticipation of a busy summer, when most ESL schools in Canada earn their bread and butter. |

For what it's worth, I took the CELTA training at LSC Toronto and found it to be a great experience. I realize that's not what you're asking, but that's my two cents worth.
I have nothing but high praise for LSC.

Hi
Those who have worked there, your experience would be very valuable:
-hourly wage? any prep time paid? at which branch did you work, in case conditions vary by city...
-daytime hours or mostly eves and weekends?
-mainly seasonal, or were many teachers kept on after the 'summer rush'?
many thanks... |

Yes, LSC pays both an hourly wage and prep time. All of it is daytime hours. Classes run from 9 am to 4:45 pm daily. It's a chain school, so natually conditions do not vary by the city. |

Hi VanKen,
I'm just curious - can you provide wage figures? If not, why not?
Just want to distinguish between infomercials and disinterested posting.
That said, daytime hours can be a good deal, depending. |

You go first... please tell us all how much you make.
Actually, in this part of the world, salaries are a confidential matter. Given that, and the fact that policies change at the schools, I think it is better for you to inquire at LSC about starting salaries for new teachers.
Heck, I don't even know what any of my co-workers make, nor do I care to find out, as it is none of my beeswax.
However, to give you an idea of what some new teachers are making, check out this ad that appeared recently on Craigslist:

*KTC Language Institute in Vancouver, CANADA is looking for dynamic full-time ESL teachers to teach in the schools core program.
Compensation: $18.00/hr. -25 hours/week
Yech. Vancouver is a pretty expensive place to live: $1800 CND doesn't go very far there. |

Actually, the reason I asked is because you are (supposedly) in Canada. In Canada and the US, it is not traditional to be mum about wages - particularly as they are wages and not salary; indeed the US gov't regulates minimum wage, and I would imagine Canada does the same (could be wrong there, but seems unlikely). Of course high paid execs hide their salaries and quite often with good reasons - fear and/or shame.
It is the 3rd world where even wages can be considered confidential, because of climates that make most ways of making money illegal and tremendous disparities of income.
In any event, I intend no offense - it just seems that in your part of the world, such information would be more readily forthcoming. |

Au contraire... in Canada people rarely talk about how much they make and it is a very private matter. Sometimes we'll say things like "I make more than you", or "I just make the minimum wage", but anything more detailed than that is a closely guarded secret. As I said, I don't even know what my co-workers earn... it could be more (if they have been at the school longer than me) or less (if they just joined us). Also, policies change... For example, when I started at LSC, I was told I'd get a .50/hour increase after 3 months employment. That policy was dropped after I was hired and the teachers who the school hired after me were denied this little bonus.
As I said, questions about salary, etc. are good questions to ask the schools. Most will be free with the GENERAL facts, but will NOT devulge details about any individuals. Nor will I!
No offense taken at your question, and I hope you were not offended by my response. On an international forum like this it is important to keep an open mind to cultural/political differences that appear and to react accordingly. |
