I'm wondering if someone can help me - i'v ebeen offered a job out in doha for the Asian Gaes but feel the offer is too low from what i hear about accomodtion costs. they are offering me 12,000 riyal a month, but with accomdation starting at 5000 riyal, it seems too low. i told them what i thought but they said they cannot raise the offer. if anyone can offer quick advice cos I've got to give them my final answer ASAP!
thanks |

If the 12000 includes housing, then its NOT WORTH TAKING, rent is very high and you'll end up struggling to make ends meet. |

No accommodation? That's not an offer, that's an insult. |

Well, we don't know what kind of a job offer we are talking about here. It may be as an entry level office worker or a ticket taker for the Asian Ga(m)es... presuming that is what Irishchic was talking about. I don't think that they are hiring teachers, are they?
So, it is really hard to know if this is a fair offer or not... We can only know that she won't save much with the cost of housing.

A friend of mine is working for Asian Games. Things that I heard from my friend will shocked you. You will be surprise how this Asian Games Committe structure salary payment to their employees.
She discovered that country of origin passport play big role as well. If you are a holder of British, USA, Aussie or similar countries you are in high rank. But, if you are a holder of Phillipines, Jordan, India or any countries that similar to that 12,000 is very high. Many employees in middle level of management (coordinator) are taking somewhere 6,000 - 8,000 (INCLUDE ALL; transport, housing, etc)
So...Go figure. Many employees are dissapointed but they have no other choice but continue working. They cant go back because they have resign from their previous employer. Most of them are married so they need to continue working to feed their families. |

I'm afraid that country of origin, nationality or just plain race is usually a factor in salary and conditions in the Gulf. In the education world, it can be justified (or just disguised?) by referring to the country where the qualifications were obtained - employers often won't accept degrees from India or Africa (except maybe South Africa), for example, but in businesses that will accept the qualifications, there's almost always a difference in the conditions. |

That's pretty much SOP for the Middle East. It will likely continue as long as people are willing to work cheap... You can say they have no choice, but in fact they usually DO have a choice. But, as long as they don't see any other options, they are stuck.
Sorry if I sound callous, but after meeting and talking to hundreds of poorly paid workers I have come to the conclusion that they simply do not know what their options are. That effectively narrows them drastically.
I've heard the complaints and the pleas. When I suggest "Why don't you do this?", or "Why don't you try that?", I am met with blank stares. Many of these people don't know where to start or don't believe thet they can do any better. Sad, but whose responsibility is it to help these people get ahead? |

HI guys,
to let you know, the position was for manager/coordinator for 1 to 3 venues for the games for spectator services. i did the same job out in italy few months ago for the turin winter olympics, was given 35000 euro salary, bonus of 5000 euro, accomodation, car etc, so coming from that this offer seems a pittance. the Asian games didn't offer accomodation, just 1 week accomodation at the start to give me time to sort something out on my own.
in the end i rejected it. I'd already said that i thought the offer was too low in the hope that they would raise it, but no luck. |

I expect that you were in competition with people who had much lower expectations. It sounds like you made the right decision. Considering that they are rolling in mountains of petrodollars at the moment, you would think that they would pay the price for someone with your experience.
Oh well... it is their loss.

I went to a meeting the other day and was shown the Opening ceremonies CD for the 15th Asian Games....WOW. The Emir apprantely said that money is no object for making these games the best games ever, better than any Olympics or Commonwealth Games. The opening ceremony will cost at least $100 million USD. That's the entire budget for the next Commonwealth Games.
Apprantely this is made possible by oil money and the fact that Qatar thrives on slavery...I mean cheap Asian labour...no I mean slavery. |
