I have had sky tv for a few years. I gotta say that I am getting increasingly bored of it. For starters as much as I try I only end up watching a few comedies on Fox, a few nature programmes on National Geographic, the BBC news, and the odd movie on 312. I sometimes pay for the English premier league if there are enough good matches that I want to see that month. For this I pay 2500 or 4000 for the football.

My compliants. Well the first year I had it I thought it was pretty good, but they repeat the same shows FOREVER. I have been watching the Simpsons, Friends, 70's show, and few others since the beginning. They just start them again. Why not show older classic shows too? Married with Children woud be great.
The BBC news is fine, but the constant breaks with the same crappy music.......Arghhhhhhhh
I dont pay for the Sky movies as I am not into the typical hollywood fare, but 312.....again....repeats from 3,4,5 years ago.
There are a few other shows on other channels, but they tend to be one show on a channel so hardly worth paying for.

So I was wondering about wowow. Is it any good? Anybody got it and care to say? Actually just to check. How much is the dish and subscription?
Hehe...anybody in kansai area wanna swap? Honest Sky is a good deal for two years or so.Smile

Wowow as far as I know, is only one channel. And it's a movie channel pretty much, I used to have it part of my cable package in my old apartment. Sounds like that isn't what you're looking for...

Sounds like the solution for you may be to catch stuff from home via bittorrent or iTunes or perhaps ordering some DVD box sets with your favorite shows sent over.

I agree, the Sky fare is pretty weak in many respects. That's why I recently acquired Season 6 of CSI, Season 7 of M*A*S*H (NOT easy to get for some reason)... and all 16 seasons of the Simpsons. I'm also in the middle of Season 2 of LOST... Wife wants to watch some old Survivor shows but I'm not much into that... I really enjoyed Fear Factor before we came to Japan though.

I can usually get about half of what I'm looking for online and the other half I need to visit a video store. So why do I have Sky then? I still enjoy watching shows on Discovery like American Chopper, Myth Busters, on AXN I watch Stargate SG1, and my wife watches shows on Fox. It's easy to get home from work, flip on the satellite and get entertained. When there's nothing on, we have tons of other stuff to watch on reserve.

I gotta' agree with Jim... downloading is the way to go!

I've got SkyPerfect TV, and occasionally watch the same channels you mentioned (plus 360 Super Channel, 370 History Channel, and 372 LaLa are good too), but if you transfer downloads onto DVD-R, you can amass a huge library of quality stuff to watch. I've got about 200 DVD-Rs with dozens of shows... Lost, Cheers, Seinfeld, Family Guy, West Wing, MASH, Friends, Sex and the City, Sopranos, Survivor, Simpsons, South Park, Wonder Years, Married with Children, Drew Carey Show, Titus, 24, Entourage, Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, David Chappele Show, Everybody Hates Chris, Frasier, and Deadwood. If you supplement all of these shows with SkyPerfect, then you should never be wanting for things to watch.

I've never had Wowow, but it's only one channel, right? While it's probably better on it's own than many of the channels on SkyPerfect, I think a SkyPerfect package has got Wowow beat.

Check out different internet providers also.

When I was connected with Fletz, they had an online movie/tv/games/porno/you name it peer for their users.

I could catch three to four football games a month just on that site and with no extra charge, simply my internet connection fee which was very cheap.

Some of the games also had English commentary.

The movies section amazed me most. Each month four to six American movies would be on hand for you to watch at any given time, and each month the movies would change.

I was very impressed with the selection also.

Resevoir Dogs, The Alter Boys, Insomnia, Dirty Work, and The Big Lebowski are a few that come to mind.

Anyways just a suggestion.

This on top of downloading complete seasons with torrents should eliminate TV completely.

I have Wowow. For me, it's just one channel, but there are digital versions as well (wowow 2, wowow 3). Along with wowow you normally get BS7, 11 (so long as you are getting a dish and decoder, as opposed to cable) so that's sports (English Sumo after 5pm, most of the Mariners and Yankees baseball games, although it seems to skip half innings every now and then if the Japanese stars don't do anything in particular) and news as well.

If you aren't into Hollywood movies, you won't like Wowow. That's basically all it is (oh, and Liga Espanol soccer/football, as well as boxing every Monday night). It shows a couple of tv shows a week (the final season of Third Watch was just on, that was great!) But there will often be months and months between the end of a season and showing the next season, or else they won't show the next one at all (that's what they seemed to do with the Soprannos). They will show the same season over and over for some shows (Friends is on again, one episode at the back to back with Joey season 2).

Other than that, right now it seems to be showing Korean movies more than 50% of the time. I can't count the number of times I've looked in the paper, seen that there is absolutely no English programming on until like midnight, and just read a book all day (on the weekends, if I'm not going out for some reason).

Every now and then I get frustrated enough to think I'll cancel it and have no TV except NHK because I'm paying every month and usually it'S just to watch the same Hollywood movies they've been showing for three months. And then just before I get around to actually doing it, they start advertising that a new series will be on in a few weeks or something like that (I try to tell myself that they aren't literally waiting for all the foreigners to start cancelling before thinking 'oh crap! We target foreigners and don't provide them with any shows!', but maybe that's exactly what they are doing. It would explain why it's always five or six weeks before a new series is going to start).

Bottom line is I use it more than enough to justify the cost (If I rented movies every time I watch Wowow, I'd be spending a lot more) but if I didn't video tape the channel during the day (you can tape for ten hours on a single video tape, and then just fast forward tot he parts you want to see) then it might not be worth it, but it is JUST BARELY worth it for me. I'm out usually three nights a week and at least one day over the weekend, and I also read a LOT, have DVDs of television series and movies sent from Canada, and often spend time playing music instead of TV (either Cds or just playing my guitar of harmonica).
