Dear New Jersey dude:
United States passports are technically not valid for travel to North Korea unless you have received a special waiver from the State Department and mess of other places.
Next, it is all but impossible for you to be issued a North Korean tourist visa. You need to be part of an officially invited workers' delegation, peace group, international caritative organization, etc. This is not Cuba and this is one place where the door is firmly shut.
The fringe Protestant groups in the United States such as the Seventh Day Adventists send peace and food groups, there, however.
And just remember -- you are looking into the looking glass upside down once you enter. Truly exercise caution.
As for being black in China, most of the previous posters, with the exception of Jeff, are right on the mark in my opinion. And regardless of the trashing that Tofuman received from other posters, his very aperpos comments about a new school and financial solvency should NOT be ignored. I have been here four years and unless a non-government school has done the test of time for at least TEN years, I would never, ever, ever, ever even considerate it. Many of them, beautiful buildings and all, are here today, gone tomorrow...with the owner in Switzerland with all of the funds, i.e., construction funds included, teachers' salaries, tuition, etc. Just do a google on this very Board.
This is not the United States here, to be redundant, and please do not come here expecting generous portions of Equal Opportunity, Equal Employment, etc. The race card does not work here except to work in your disfavor. There will be no deference at all. And yes, you will need a very, very thick skin in some places. That's the simple reality of it all.
I taught in one university in Chengdu with an ex-basketball player and University of Toronto graduate. Handsome guy. Highly, highly literate. The students complained to the Dean that they could not understand him...because of his .. African accent ... and he was a CANADIAN who spoke impeccable CBC English. The students complained to the Dean that he had a smell about him..which was outrageous...because the poor guy was like a QC model in terms of clothes and behavior. And then there were all the rumors about his masculine "size" so that there was practically a line of female students at the front door of his apartment all wanting a "test ride". Eventually he left the school, meaning after about two months as he could not handle all of this. And we witnessed all of this and we tried to plead with the students and the Administration but it seemed to fall on deaf ears.
So just be aware, guy, this ain't the Bronx. |

"So what Tofuman says is that all the blacks he has ever met were in jail or getting arrested. And if you are a typical USA black you fall into this criteria. "
Jeff, perhaps you should stick to boffing immature girls. Obviously, if you interpret my remarks as you do, the subtleties of English escape you. Luckily, you are a teacher in China; consequently, competency in your field of supposed expertise is not required. |

I don't consider myself to be an overly sensitive guy. When I was a kid, I went to a predominantly white school, so I heard my fair share of nonsense. But I am human, so like anyone else, I do have a breaking point.. |

I don't think Tofu grasps what the word "typical" really means. Or maybe he put it in the wrong part of the sentence. Perhaps he meant, "Typically, if you are black; I can't imagine how this is going to be a good experience for you."
I would enjoy myself quite a bit if I were black in China. I would chase people and threaten them with made-up diseases I possessed. It might not be too good for the whole progressive movement, but it'd sure entertain the hell out of me. And making children cry and run away? Now that's power. Try not to go power crazy over there.

Yes, come to China - this is where you will find your breaking point very quickly.
I am not black. Neither am I white. I am a man of color. |

When the white Europeans first visited the Kingdom of Hawaii they were called a name that meant strange people with skin sickness because of their white skin. |

Two Nay's and no Aye's, looks like I was wrong. I must say it's the first time I have ever heard of anything longer than a 1 year contract/visa in China. And I have come to know many Foreigners here, including those who are in careers other than teaching, and those who by rights should have a 5+ year visa. But it has always been the same story, they would only be given a 1 year visa regardless of their contract. This basically meant that if for some reason they could not obtain that second years visa, their contract was null and void. At whose expense? The foreigners, for not being able to remain and complete. |
Although the norm at most schools in one year, they really can sign a longer term contract if they want. Also, the PSB now will issue two year work visas, but it just depends on their mood when you apply and, of course, how much your school pushes them. |

It's true that a US passport is not valid for travel to North Korea, Cuba and maybe one or two other places, but at least in the case of Cuba it doesn't automatically stop one from entering.
The issue is really whether North Korea would let you in. It escapes me at present, but there is an official North Korean governmental agency that organizes official tours and they say that holders of American passports may join the groups subject to approval on a case by case basis.
Even if you could get in, I seriously doubt these tours are anything but very rigidly controlled and the chances of you seeing the "real" North Korea are slim -- very slim. |
