| They are learning how to exploit the tourist much better now. I was walking aroung Talımhane in Taksim the other day in broad daylight and in the space of 5 minutes I was saat ka abied three times. They have made a good job of the area but I was talking to a taxi driver and he advised me not to walk around Talımhane at nıght because of the saat ka abis. |

....which, by implication, suggests Turks are ugly and dirty. Not nice, not fair. |

... wouldn't say that the Bosphorous villages of Arnavutkoy, Bebek, Yenikoy etc ... are 'patched up' for toursists ... and they are certainly not ugly and dirty ... (aside from the inner harbour of Istinkiye - which is being worked on) ...
You did say everywhere Turks live ... |

funny that I'm the only non-native in my apartment, and I live in Suadiye, which is pretty nice - for a scouser
kind of fucks your theory up doesn't it?

Ghost thought Eskisehir was bad, until it arrived in Taiwan (September 2005).
The cities in Taiwan are ugly, concrete jungles, completely devoid of charater or virtue....just a bunch of stores, and then surrounding buildings with washing hanging all over the place, and scooters parked everywhere, impeding the rights of people (like ghost) who like to walk and cycle.
Boring, boring, would characterize Taiwan scenery and life, and although one can make good 'coin' in Taiwan (average salary about $18-$22 U.S per hour) the lifestyle (boring), people (dull) and scenery (unattractive) make the whole Taiwanese 'experience' less than 'memorable.'
So yes, one thought 'Eski' was bad, but in retrospect one realizes, now, that Taiwan is ten times worse.
Take a look at the Taiwan page, for ghost's recent nightmare in a Taiwanese Hospital.
Ghost in Taichung, Taiwan. |

| You don't know an ugly city until you've lived in Korea. It's nothing but concrete and depression through and through, and that's any and all cities there because they all look exactly the *beep* same. Much more trash in the streets than Istanbul, and not a bit of charm if you ask me. |
But it's so diverse! |

| yes the waterfront area is nicer, and yes it's for tourists and ships/boats as they approach. plus these people have money, and theyre just a tiny fragment of the population. anyway bebek is pretty ugly when you consider other waterfront areas in other countries - there's plenty of trash in the water, sunken small boat here and there, and the development right up to the water's edge is not pleasant. but where most turks live the city is really horrendous. this is partly cos it is all they can afford; because the suburban councils are corrupt and inefficient; and because turks generally dont take much care of their streets, environment, etc. youve just gotta look at the trash all over the place. the city is for the most part very gray, buildings are piled up on top of one another, the streets are filthy with dirt, esp. taksim. it's a disgrace!!! theyre certainly not gonna win any awards for cleanliness here. and there's no 'green suburb' or decorative part of the city that isnt on show for tourists. |

Have you noticed how old the new flats appear after just a few years. My flat is only about 9 years old and when I moved in in 98 we were the first tenants and the area was still a building site.
Now most of the sockets have fallen out of the wall and there are holes in many of the walls where they have knocked pipes through for the gas. There are cracks left over from the earthquake and because of leaks that have never been solved the bathroom ceiling is honeycombed with plaster and stains. |

Yeah right .. the Turks living in those Bosphorous villages are doing it for the tourists ...
Just how much of Istanbul have you surveyed for this report of yours ... perhaps you could submit it to the council if its that detailed .. it would help them in their efforts .. which off the top of my head include:
| Quote: |
Cleaning up the waters of the Halic (complete) you weren't in Istanbul ten years ago I presume ...
Making the beaches at Cadde Bostan clean and safe for (free) swimming
Icerenkoy - Ripping up roads, pavements etc ... and relaying roads properly (for once) and re-paving actually using paving slabs ...
What abut the vision of 'agaclandirmak' the planting of millions of trees ...
Kadikoy - restoring and refitting many of the older buildings ...
The destruction of thousands of 'gecekondu's with plans to build organised housing in its stead ...
etc ...the list goes on |
I'm not sure if you've noticed but there's major development work going on in Istanbul these days ... what's the point in slagging off somehwere that's actually trying to get onto its feet ... Dubai, for example, has a reputation for great modern architecture and landscaping ... but if you've been there at all it's one huge construction site .. especially the tourist strip along the beaches .. it resembles more the early stages of building a colony on Mars ... but hey there's a crisp packet floating down the Bosphorous ...
... you sound like one of those types that would be better off living on the cover of a chocolate box ... when you leave next month, Istanbul won't miss you ... but you will have missed out on a lot of Istanbul .. |
