Gentleman, Since both of you have misunderstood my point, I'm going to make it clearer for you:

If [OP ] is like many of the other heterosexual black men I have known, he may consider violence an effective tool for problem solving. He also expects to be treated with respect, whether deserved or not. He expects his privacy to be respected. He may have a lower tolerance for racial insensitivity than white folks, understandably.

I'm not at all suggesting that any of the above are wrong, just that in this country, most young, straight black men are not going to want to put up with the type of disrespect and prejudice that are everywhere.

JiF: A 20 year old you are bonking is mature? The fact that you are bonking her, that she allows herself to be used by a white man who may discard her like yesterday's newspaper is hardly the way a mature 20 year old would conduct her life.

That a "mature" girl would allow any foreign teacher to bonk her is simply a great illustration of an oxymoron. "Mature" girls here get married with their parents approval to a guy with financial resources.

Sounds more like "traditional." So it's mature to follow the convential customs of the society you're born in...rather than think for yourself? Yeah, free-thinkers are quite immature.

Tofuman,

Your points are really well made. I have been here almost four years and I can assure the other posters that what you write is NOT at all off-the-mark. Indeed, as I pointed out in a previous posting, I would encourage any person of colour to seriously consider whether or not they have enough personal fortitude to enjoy China. I have worked with many African teachers here and I have listened to their travails. There is a FT pecking order in China and for anyone to deny its existence is simply not to be in touch with the reality.

Many of my recruiter friends in China will not even handle people of colour and no matter how hard I have tried to induce them to do so, it has been to no avail.

China is very America-focused these days in its dealings and that is entirely clear in the hiring process as well, particularly now that new visa arrangements have been struck between the two governments for Chinese students entry into the United States. In fact, I think it fair to say that even America has become more China-focused these days. And this carries through in all of the dealings.

At the university where I am now there is a very clear double-standard : how the university tends to its American lecturers and how it tends to the rest of the FTs.

But to return to the issue : if I were the New Jersey dude in question, with his background, I would probably do GuangZhou, ShenZhen, Beijing, ShangHai, HangZhou or places that have had more experience with non-white teachers.

Just my thoughts on a very, very OP.

I guess what I am trying to figure out how much of the treatment is just curiousity, which there is nothing wrong with, and how much is outright hostility.

I'm just making an estimate here, but I'd venture to say that it is < 1% hostility. Now whether or not the other 99% is curiousity I cannot say. Perhaps it is just an irrational fear of the unknown.
