Why would you consider going to Saudi from Dubai?

Have you ever been to Saudi?

I also deemed this rather low, especially since I do have previous experience teaching in Saudi some years ago, albeit a secondary school. Umm al Hadiqah

Lots of people do prefer Saudi Arabia to the Emirates, particularly former Saudi based expats. I think that people are attracted there by higher salaries, initially, but the cost of living makes short work of that, and expected increments evaporate fairly quickly.

It's also a personal choice, and not the kind of thing I'd expect to see challenged here.

Have you ever been to the Emirates?

Actually I spent 6 years in KOSA, 4 years with Lockheed, pre-Saudization and 2 with the PCA, all in Jeddah. Had some good times there, especially on weekends mooning and flashing the locals from my Hobiecat, drunks as skunks and high as kites on the creek. 1981-85 & 91-93.

I bet those days are over. Been in the Emirates (not Dubai) since then, probably don't party as much as I did in the "magical" kingdom.

My question is based on the security situation in KOSA now.

BTW, did the second half of the GOSI money ever get paid out?

What situation is that? There's been a sudden effloresence of giant concrete bollards, some tastily painted in red and white stripes. I expect someone's relative has shrares in concrete, big time. Checkpoints are heavily populated with policemen chatting on mobile phones, drearily waving past all but taxi drivers and stray bedu in little white pickups.

I don't know, but they've suddenly got loads of cash which they're using to build more and more shopping centers.

Shopping is, apparently, the national sport.

Gasoline prices were cut 34% today to 60 hallals a liter. Now, if the prices of everything else will just start coming down as well...

Well, I do recall a few shootouts and such in the last couple of years.

I'm not adverse to little action now and then, was in Iran for their revolution and several months after. The plus side of that was that they raised our salary every month to keep us there, (Bell Helicopter Intn'l{ BHI}). We all had tee-shirts that read "Stay and die for BHI", with faux bulet holes in them.

Unless you are what the Saudi authorities refer to as 'a member of a deviant group', the shoot-outs you mention are unlikely to impact you. There have been few, if any, attacks on expats in KSA for about two years.

Wait a second, wasn't there an attack on a Western compound last year where a few people were killed?

A couple of years back on return from holiday we found that the RC and Bechtel had decided to build a bunker/compound around us, and ten foot high two foot thick concrete walls were springing up everywhere.

And the company that made a big fat profit from it all? Bin Laden construction limited. Talk about keeping it all in the family.

You are probably thinking of the attack that happened two years ago, when 25 foreigners were killed in the Oasis Compound in al-Khobar.

This poster took off after that but then came back. It has been quiet since then. Long may that continue.

Of course on the horizon are some dark clouds of war. When the US pull out of Iraq the looneys engaged up there will come home. Dropping a nuclear device on Iran may p*** a few people off.

But I still prefer KSA to the other places in the Gulf !

Thanks Scot,

I knew some stuff has gone on there recently, and I'm not losing my mind.

Not quite... just a fuzzy memory that cut the time span in half... Cool
